Cloverfield
Review by Lando da Pimp
I remember sitting in the theater watching the Blair Witch Project awaiting and praying for the characters to just die. I had so much gratification when the credits began to roll and each of the annoying, agitating characters died because they deserved it. I didn't think I could achieve that satisfaction until I watched Cloverfield.
The Story
Cloverfield is presented as "evidence" obtained by the United States Department of Defense pertaining to Case Designate "Cloverfield." The video was discovered in the area "formerly known as Central Park". The footage was shot from the a hand-held camera used by various characters throughout the monster attack on New York.
The footage opens with a going away party for the character Rob who is leaving for Japan in the morning. Rob's friend "Hud" is in charge of filming goodbye wishes at the party, but the party is disrupted by the building shaking and blackout. The party members flee to the street where an explosion goes off and the head of the Statue of Liberty comes crashing down onto the street next to him.
The film continues to follow Rob, Hud, Marlena, and Lily as they whine and complain for the next hour. While they should be trying to escape for their lives, they don't.
Special Features
While the movie may not be the best film, the DVD is loaded with a number of special features. The biggest selling point is the alternative endings. Don't expect them to radically change how the film ends though. The Making of Cloverfield is a behind the scene look at how this film stayed behind the radar of every film geek. A task that is almost impossible these days. Also included are a few deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and a feature on the Cloverfield Visual Effects.
Overall
I despised this movie for many reasons. The first being the characters. You can easily call this movie a Blair Witch Project with a budget. The effects are amazing, and I will give credit to the monster design. I can't however not watch this film without cursing theses characters out. The whining and complaining never stops. When they do get some help they still complain.
I think the idea of the film would work better if it wasn't filmed by the characters. The idea that a person would continue to film while a tragedy is going on is absurd. Give your audience a little credit.
I will give credit that the DVD is very well done, and for people who loved or even liked this film, you won't be disappointed by this film. However I can't justify your taste in film.
