Drillbit Taylor (Extended Survival Edition)
Review by Lando da Pimp
It seems you can't watch a comedy lately without Judd Apatow's name attached. Usually that means that the film is sure to make you laugh. Afterall, this is the man you brought us Freaks and Geeks, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and of course Superbad. However with only a producer credit, and Seth Rogan given a writer credit, that is not enough for me to recommend this film.
The Story
The film begins with Ryan and Wade as they start their first day of high school. Their day starts off on the wrong foot when they are both wearing the same shirt. At school the day doesn't get any better as they, along with tagalong Emmit, become the instant target of the school bully, Filkins. The school day becomes a daily living hell. The boys then decide that they need to hire a personal bodyguard.
After an exhaustive search they hire former covert black-ops and exotic martial arts Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson). What they don't know is Drillbit is a complete fraud. He is really a homeless bum.
Special Features
The extended edition includes additional scenes not seen in the theater. Since I didn't see the film when it came out I can 't let you know how different the film is. Also included is a few deleted scenes, making of documentries, and a gag reel.
Overall
I really wanted to love this film. I think the idea could be really funny. However it doesn't work for me. I would have loved to see it become a bit ubsurd with Drillbit constantly beating up the bully. What we got, however was a film that attempted to capatilize on the sweetness factor. Boring.
If you enjoyed the film in the theaters, then you will enjoy this DVD with a nice collection of special features. However, if you haven't seen this film I recommend you give it a rent. Just don't expect it to be your typical Apatow film.
