Hot Rod
Review by Lando Da Pimp
I wasn't sure about Hot Rod when I saw the trailer this summer. I love Andy Samberg on Saturday Night Live, especially the skit Laser Cats, so I was very excited that he was starring in his first film. I think Andy is really funny, but the trailer for Hot Rod kept me away from the theaters.
The Story
Local small town self-proclaimed stuntman Rod Kimble needs to raise money to save his abusive stepfather's life. Frank needs a heart operation, but his insurance won't cover the costs of the operation. In order to earn his step fathers respect, and to kick his ass, Rod plans to jump fifteen buses with a motorcycle.
Special Features
Hot Rod has a number of good special features. Ancestors Protect Me shows the behind the scenes and making of this film. A number of deleted and extended scenes are actually very enjoyable. Also included are outtakes and the theatrical trailer.
Overall
While I don't think Hot Rod is an really funny film, it does have its moments. Hot Rod uses a lot of references to 80s films(Footloose & Flashdance), specifically the music montage. These are some of the funniest moments of the film. I would have liked to have seen more of these musical moments, as they are funny. Taking a cue from, The Family Guy there are a number of scenes that seem to go on and on forever, and not end. Just like in Family Guy, these sceens work very well.
Where I think Hot Rod fails is with the supporting characters in the gang. I found them to mimic the "Napoleon Dynamite" strangeness factor. The characters are just two weird, making them unbelievable.
Hot Rod is easily worth a rental. If you grew up in the 80's you will easily get the references to the films of that era. The main reason to watch the film is for the amazingly hot Isla Fisher who plays Rod loves interest. Hot Rod isn't for everybody, but if you enjoyed this film than I recommend picking up the DVD.
