Son of Rambow
Review by Lando da Pimp
Early in the year, I heard great buzz about a film called, Son of
Rambow. This came out about the time of the new Stallone Rambo film.
Needless to say I was confused as to what the film was about. Turns
out if was an international film that had critical reception at
Sundance. So what is Son of Rambow about, and why is it spelled with a W?
The Story
Set in the summer of the early 80's, Son of Rambow tells the story of friends Will and Lee as they make their film "Son of Rambow." The boys became inspired by the watching the movie Rambo: First Blood and decide to make their own action film.
Both schoolboys use the film to escape from their depressing homelives. Lee, hides from his bullying older brother, and Will who is part of a strict Plymouth Brethren religious sect. During the filmmaking experience, the two realize how much they need each other.
Special Features
A small, but nice collection of features include Director commentary, The Making of Son of Rambow, and the directors's short film Aron which was the inspiration for Son of Rambow.
Overall
I really enjoyed Son of Rambow. I did however want more in the end. The scenes of the kids filming the movie were the most entertaining parts.
So why was the film spelled with a "W." Even though clips of First Blood was included, the studio would not allow the name "Rambo" to be used. So they added the "W." The studio was afraid that people wouldn't understand that this wasn't a sequel. I was more confused as to why Rambo was mispelled.
Son of Rambow is a funny idea that is almost pulled off. In the end I was curious if the director was making a commentary on his story of making the film.
