Ren & Stimpy
Seasons 3 and a Half-ish
Review by Mr. Stinkhead

After watching the first two seasons and being greated with a wave of nostalgia (that smelled like crispy cat litter), I was anxious to check out the follow-up DVD Ren & Stimpy: Seasons 3 and a Half-ish. If you don't know the history of R&S, you should know that Nickelodeon fired creator John K but continued to make episodes without him. Call it the ultimate irony, but John K is back to lend commentary on a handful of these episodes he had nothing to do with.

He's not bitter, but he's certainly not impressed, and he doesn't fail to let you know that. It's actually kind of funny. He doesn't come out and say "I got fired from Nick, and now people want to know about these episodes" he just launches into... "Where's the story already? What are they doing?"

He does point out some interesting aspects such as how the replacement writers attempted to devise a formula from the first episodes, and recreate "genuine" looking episodes without John K around. And it's obvious.

There's another interesting audio feature, Ren and Stimpy on Ren & Stimpy... the characters offer their view point as you watch the episodes. (These certainly are not for children). I had a tough time "seeing" Ren sitting there watching this, but it was a funny idea.

Aside from the commentaries, this three disc set is crammed with episodes, many of which I enjoyed as a kid (before being aware of all the politics behind it). It's true, they're not pure unadulterated John K every time... but they are eons above what is on TV these days. And if you enjoyed them back then, you'll enjoy them now, perhaps even more. I loved the Circus Midgets, and the Abe Lincoln memorial cleaner episodes particularly.

From the box: Powdered Toastman, Jimmy Lummox, Jerry the Bellybutton Elf, crazy Wilbur Cobb, deranged circus midgets, and more! From girl scouts to brain surgery, from prehistoric times to Washington, D.C., from inside Stimpy Bellybutton, to inside Ren's face.

Read this amazing look back at the phenomenon of Ren & Stimpy from Animation World Magazine, 2001.

Now's a perfect time for you to check out the Ren & Stimpy Action Figures from Palisades toys. They are on sale at
