Review by Lando da Pimp
Sahara was billed as the next great Indiana Jones adventure. That is a big proclamation that doesn't come close to the greatness of Raiders of the Lost Ark. I did not catch this film in theaters and was surprised that I did enjoy it at times. Sahara is not a great film but it is fun.
Sahara finds the hero, Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) searching in Africa for a Confederate ironclad submarine along with his friend and sidekick Al Giordino (Steve Zahn). Also in Africa is the Dr. Eva Rojas (Penelope Cruz) from the W.H.O (World Health Organization) searching for a deadly contaminate that is killing villagers.
When Dirk and Al cross paths with Dr. Eva Rojas, they find themselves on a new adventure where they discover a plot to poison the water supply for the entire world with the deadly contaminate. Along the way they find many clues to the fate of Dirk's Ironclad ship.
The special features on the disc make this dvd a great buy for fans of the film. Three making-of features detail the making of the film along with deleted scenes and director commentary with Breck Eisner and Matthew McConaughey.
Sahara is a fun over-the-top adventure film. The proclamation of the next Indiana Jones is a bit of a stretch since there is no real "hero type" character. The chemistry between Mconaughey and Cruz is also non-existant. Steve Zahn plays the same character as always, but I still enjoy it. He gives the film humor that is needed at times. In spite of the lack of character development the movie has a lot of fun action sequences making it a good popcorn flick.
