Thwip!! Every red-blooded American boy with access to a comic book has, at one point or another, wanted to be Spider-Man. Granted, most of us don't have access to radioactive isotopes with which to expose arachnids, or a genetics lab to splice them together to get one that way. Anyway. Spider-Man is one of the greatest super-heroes the world has ever seen,
and thanks to the good people of X-Box, Playstation 2, and Nintendo Game Cube, we have the opportunity to play him like he's never been played before.
The game starts right where the movie does, with an angry Peter Parker in his wrestling-outfit version of his later costume. The web swinging is awesome, the sound effects are terrific, the levels are huge, and the combat moves are nothing short of butt-clenchingly terrific. Best of all,
Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe provided the voices for Spider-Man and the Green Goblin!
Everything you'd expect in a Spider-Man game is here. The web-swinger's trademark wit and snappy one-liners, inane threats from the villains, the ability to walk on every surface you can think of, and surprises for those who look for them. Have fun hopping on the Vulture's back.
For those of you who like to go for extra advantages when and where possible (I mean cheating), this game won't leave you wanting. There are all sorts of nifty codes, ranging from giving you all the combat moves from the start, unlimited webbing, being tiny Spider-Man, and even playing the entire game as the Green Goblin. It's wacky fun. Of course, I won't actually tell you what the codes are, but you won't have any trouble finding them online.
I give the game a 9 out of 10. It's near-perfect. I think they could have gone the extra mile and gotten Kirsten Dunst to voice Mary Jane. And the extra levels are a nice challenge, although Kraven comes across as a complete dork. Still, the game doesn't quite follow the plot of the film, which I wouldn't mention except that one of the selling points of the game is that it's based on the movie. Bonus points for the tutorial narration by Bruce Campbell!
