Alex Clare in Washington DC

Alex Clare

Alexander Clare played to a packed 9:30 Club last night. I have to admit, I was introduced to Alex via his hit Too Close‘s inclusion in the Microsoft IE commercial, but I fell in love with his album The Lateness of the Hour with one listen. Alex’s strength is in his mastery of his own voice. The man has pipes and he knows how to belt out soulful songs without resorting to just endless screaming. Click below for more.

The careful fusion of the wub-wub-wub electronica (dare I say dubstep?) without relying on it shows Clare knows what he’s doing. It gives his songs a little something extra, but it only adds to the overall feeling, it doesn’t ride it. One of the biggest surprises of the night was when he strapped on a guitar and played a brief acoustic set. He doesn’t necessarily look like a rockstar, but he belongs on stage. I also liked how pleasantly-surprised he looked when addressing the sold out audience. I’m hoping he doesn’t get jaded as the tour wears on.

From the people I talked to, there were plenty of Clare fans that are almost annoyed at how popular Too Close has gotten, but it was clearly the hit of the evening. When he did play it (thankfully without much build-up or encore teasing, he just said “You’re going to like this one” and launched right into it, after his acoustic set), everyone was pumping their fists in unison and singing along. Clare was eating it up.

I really feel this is a crowd pleaser concert. If you only knew Too Close from the snippets you’ve heard on TV, you would still really enjoy yourself. The reason is that at it’s heart its good, solid music, and Clare knows how to keep the crowd engaged and really give you 100%. If you were a big fan of Clare back before Microsoft got their grubby hands on his music, you’d still be really thrilled.
