DC Universe Superman “Mullet” Figure

The new DC Universe Superman may not be the best “Man of Steel” figure, but it is a great representation of the character. The new sculpt is overly chiseled with a strangely wide stance and has a MULLET!

Ok, maybe its not quite a mullet, but you can’t deny that the longer hair version is not the typical Superman look. Short in front for saving humanity, long at night when he attends Winger concerts! I want my Superman figures to have variety. I welcome any variations to distinguish each figure from the different waves. This version of Superman is based on The Return of Superman after his death by the hands of Doomsday.

Sculpt
The new figure is an improvement over the previous DC Universe Superman figure. The facial sculpt has a more distinguished chin and facial features. The face also has a very patriotic determined look. The previous figure had a lot of harsh defined edges. The only facial complaint would be that his head feels a bit too small.

The figure stands at the standard 6.5 inches. The cape is made of a soft rubber, and shorter. They also toned down the muscles. They are still exaggerated, but not overly ripped, even for “The Man of Steel!” The figure has 19 points of articulation, allowing for a full range of movement.

Because they use the same body for a lot of the figures in the DCUC wave they all have closed fists. You don’t have much choice but have Superman punch. One idea may be to have a variety of hands that you can swap. Of course, that would add extra cost to an already costly figure.

Paint
I really like the darker richer blue and red on this version of Superman. This feels more like Supes’ than the very bright shades used previously. My biggest gripe would have to be with the Superman S. In movies, cartoons, and action figures the symbol is either too large or too small. This time the symbol is way to big. The back of the cape symbol is way to high. Because of the shorter cape its painted very high up on his shoulders.

Overall
I have read online that a lot of people are disappointed in the hairstyle. I don’t mind it as much. For those who hate it here is some good news.  Mattel is releasing a version with a more normal hair style packaged in a special 2-pack with Braniac. I recommend picking up this version. Its different enough from previous versions to include it into your collection.
