Howard The Duck, Special Edition?

I some how missed this piece of news. Yesterday Howard The Duck was released as a “Special Edition” DVD! This was the first film where people questioned George Lucas’s decision making. Afterall, this was the guy who brought us Star Wars and Indiana Jones. He then brings us a world of talking ducks.

Howard the Duck was “loosely” based on the Marvel Comics character created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik. Howard first appeared in the book Adventure into Fear #19 (Dec. 1973) and made appearances in The Fantastic Four and X-Men! Howard The Duck stories were often social satires or parodies of pop-culture stories like It’s a Wonderful Life and Bride of Frankenstein.

The film version of Howard The Duck took a different direction from the mythology of the character. In the film, Howard is pulled to Earth, to be precise Cleveland, by a faulty laser experiment. Howard isn’t the only one brought to Earth, the evil alien The Dark Overlord of the Universe, was also summoned. He is intent on destroying the Earth, and only Howard can stop him! The film stared Lea Thompson as Beverly Switzler, the only other character from the comics to appear in the film.

The film was a box office bomb. It’s often cited as one of George Lucas’s biggest mistakes. Film critics Siskel and Ebert proclaimed it one of theĀ  “Worst Films of 1986″. The film has achieved the status of a “B-Movie cult classic.” If you haven’t seen the film I encourage you to watch it. Afterall, it’s the only film where you can see a a pair of duck boobs!
