We’re big fans of
Back to the Future, so we jumped at the chance to review the brand new 1:15 scale light-up DeLorean from Diamond Select Toys. Check out our pics and see what we had to say. We even posed the DST
Back to the Future Minimates with them.

The first thing you notice is the size. I have several 1:18 scale DeLoreans but this, pardon the comparison, about the size of a Barbie Dream Car (I think, I never had one). Ok fine, it’s bigger than a loaf of bread. Its body is plastic (as opposed to the die-cast metal I’m used to) but the big draw here is the addition of light and sounds. We’re working on a video demo showing off all of the lights and sounds, but check out my pics for the time being.

Simply press the stem on the top and watch a random light/sound show begin. The headlights, front bumper, dashboard, time destination panel, Flux Capacitor, time bracket, tail lights, and large exhaust ports all light up. But they’re smart about it. The Flux Capacitor and headlights blink when the Engine stall sound plays, the dash and destination panel light up when the Time Circuits sound effect plays. The whole thing lights up with the grand 88mph sound is played, so there was a lot of evident thought put into syncing the lights and sound. I enjoyed playing through, trying to see each little demo.

The wheels move and the gull wings open. There is no rack and pinion steering (the front wheels on a lot of 1:18 scale die-cast cars twist when you turn the wheel) One of the clever touches is that the battery panel is under the hood. I like how this is a collectible that begs to be touched. Pick it up off the shelf, press the buttons, open the doors, just don’t leave it for display.

Some minor draw backs, number one is that the box says “Back to the Future II”, but the wheels
do not fold down, and there is Mr. Fusion. There
is a Back to the Future II, hovering DeLorean coming out later, but this one is, for all intents and purposes, the car from the first movie. Why you ask? It’s all in licensing fees. We figure it costs more to get permission to use the BTTF (1) logo since it looks great on T-shirts and other things besides toys. So to keep the cost of this car reasonable, Diamond Select put the
BTTF II logo on the box. For $50, you’re getting a hefty car, and the detail put into the lights and sound are worth it.

I just only had one other complaint. 1:15 is just a
little too big to look good with the BTTF minimates that Diamond Produced a few years ago. Here’s the conundrum. The Minimates look best standing besides the
1:24 Welly DeLoreans, but the Minimates can actually sit inside (and close the door), and look fantastic behind the wheel of the 1:18 (Sunstar) DeLorean. See my
comparison article with tons of pics. So I was kind of hoping that if Diamond made this car, and the minimates, they could make a model that looked great with the minimates both inside and out. The look small sitting inside, behind the wheel. Here’s hoping that DST makes a light up Ecto 1, they make it in scale with the
Ghostbuster Minimates!

I love this car. I’m a huge BTTF fan, and this is a must-have. They really did a top notch job with the lights and sound. Here again is my
Printable Lyon Estates Billboard, (which is more in scale to the 1:18) but see how it looks.
