One of the most brilliant television comedies of all time was the BBC show The Young Ones. I first became aware of Rik, Vyvyan, Neil, and Mike in the early ’80s when the show was shown on MTV. The show played at 11:30 PM on Saturday nights before Headbangers Ball. This was when MTV was great. Sadly, the BBC only produced twelve episodes of the series. This weeks list focuses on the greatest moments from the show. Choosing them was a very difficult task. After much debate, I narrowed down the Essential Seven Greatest Moments From The Young Ones:
7) Motörhead
Numerous bands performed live on The Young Ones. Madness, The Damned, and Dexys Midnight Runners are just a few memorable performances. However, the greatest musical performance belongs to Motörhead performing Ace of Spades on the episode Bambi. Lemmy and company performed the song interspersed with the guys antics as they rush around the railway station.
6) Vyvyan Eats the Telly
The right bleeding bastard TV detector man detects that the boys have no licence for their television. Neil attempts to distract the man from finding the telly. Unable to find a way to hide the television, Vyvyan eats it. Something he has been waiting to do. When the TV detector man discovers that Vyvyan has eaten the telly, he decides to wait for the TV to come out the other end.
5) University Challenge
The boys are chosen to represent Scumbag College in the game show University Challenge against Footlights College, Oxbridge. Luckily University Challenge gets all the questions from The Daily Mirror Book of Facts: Did You Know. Having studied the book, the boys knew that Toxteth O’Grady, U.S.A. holds the record for stuffing marshmallows up one single nostril. Toxteth also holds the record for the World’s stickiest bogey. If you watch this episode, you may notice Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and Emma Thompson as members of Footlights College.
4) The Video Nasty
“Have we got a video?” Borrowing a VCR from Harry the Bastard, Mike and Vyvyan are planning to watch video nasties all night. A vampire interferes with their plans and they never actually get watch the video nasty that contains a sex scene with a headless corpse and a virgin astronaut.
3) Vyvyan Attempts to Blow Up the Bomb
A huge red atom bomb lands into the guys house still armed and blocking the fridge. Hoping to make a profit by selling the bomb Mike tries negotiating with Libya. Neil builds a bomb shelter under the kitchen table, and Rick threatens Thatcher that if she doesn’t do something to help “the kids” he would blow up England. Meanwhile Vyvyan attempts to blow up the bomb with a bottle, sledgehammer, and wrecking ball!
2) The People’s Poet
Rik, the self-proclaimed anarchist, calls himself “The People’s Poet”, a spokesperson for his generation. In the episode Flood he imagines that he stops the “Pigs” from harassing the kids with his poetry.
“What do you think you’re doing, pig?
Do you really give a fig, pig?
And what’s your favourite sort of gig, pig?
Barry Manilow
Or the black and white minstrel show?”
1) Neil Writing A Letter to the Bank Manager
The boys are strapped for cash so, Neil decides to write a letter to his bank manager asking for some. With help from the guys the final letter reads: ”Darling fascist bully boy, give me some more money, you bastard. May the seed of your loin be fruitful in the belly of your woman, Neil.”
