Essential Seven Least Respected TV Characters

Winnie Cooper

Every successful show has a character gets no respect. This could be because of the writing, a new addition to the cast, or a bad actor. For example. On the Wonder Years, I never had any respect for Winnie Cooper. I just couldn’t understand why Kevin Arnold would ever want her, when he could have Madeline! She was annoying, and never gave Kevin any love. You can call it hating the character, but you can’t respect somebody you hate. So here is the Essential Seven Least Respected TV Characters:

7) Seven

Seven Bundy

For some dumb reason, the producers of Married… with Children, attempted to capture a more mainstream audience. Their idea was to add a 6 year old into the cast! Seven was the son of Peggy’s Cousin Zemus. Fans of the show hated the addition of the character. Eventually, he appeared less and less, and then wrote him out of the show altogether.

6) Oliver Martin

Oliver Martin

Years before the producers of Married… with Children attempted to make the show more appealing, the producers of The Brady Bunch attempted the same stunt with Cousin Oliver. In fact the addition of a younger child is sometimes known as the “Cousin Oliver Syndrome.” As the Brady kids aged, the younger audience appeal was dwindling. The shows cancellation at that point was inevitable. As much as people think Oliver was the reason for the shows demise, he didn’t have anything to do with it. In the producers eyes, Cousin Oliver, was supposed to save the show!

5) Coy and Vance Duke

Coy and Vance

During the start of the fifth season of The Dukes of Hazzard, stars John Schneider and Tom Wopat were in a salary dispute with the studio. CBS thinking that the real star of the show was the car, the General Lee, hired two lookalike replacement cousins Coy and Vance Duke.  Fans of the show were not happy with the change in cast. When Bo and Luke did return the show never recovered in the ratings and was canceled a year later.

4) Samuel “Screech” Powers

Screech

Screech is a character that doesn’t deserve anybody’s respect. He was so annoying that I felt for Lisa Turtle at times. Supposedly, Screech was Zack’s best friend. I don’t know why. I also don’t think Zack even knew why. Even the actor Dustin Diamond who portrayed Screech is irritating.

3) Stewart

Stewart

Poor Stewart. The guy is so desperate for friends that he believes that Beavis and Butt-head are his best friends. Mike Judge set out to create the lamest character right down to giving him a Winger t-shirt. Beavis and Butt-head use Stewart for their personal gain. Stewart got no respect from the other characters or the creators. Fans enjoyed the character, only to see him picked on.

2) Meg Griffin

Meg Griffin

In the history of TV, I don’t think a family sitcom ever hated the daughter as much as Family Guy hates Meg. She is disturbed, mis-understood, and self-conscious. For the first three seasons, Meg, was respected by her family. Since then, Seth MacFarlane rewrote the character to be despised by her family and friends. Fans also cringe when a new episode is tagged as a “Meg Episode.”

1) Wesley Crusher

Wesley Crusher

I can see why people would disrespect Wesley Crusher. The writers sure didn’t give Wil Wheaton a very deep character. Then you have the rainbow sweaters from season one. Sorry, there is no way anybody can gain respect wearing those. The biggest disrespect Wesley received was from Jean Luc Picard. “Shut up Wesley!”

I think Randy from the last season of That 70′s Show would also fall somewhere on this list, at least from a fan’s point of view.
