When a beloved television show is ending, we usually are sad to see it go away. We wish the show could continue and never end (i.e. Firefly). This Sunday LOST is wrapping up after six seasons, and I’m so happy!
Don’t get me wrong, I love the show. There is nothing else on television like it. In the beginning I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. What was down the hatch? What is the smoke monster? Who are the others? Why does Hurley always say “dude?”
No other show has pissed me off more than LOST. After the third season I began to question if the writers had a plan on how to answer these questions. When they announced the show would end after the sixth season I had a glimmer of hope that they were putting together a plan on wrapping up the show. This Sunday we will find out if they can wrap up the show with a satisfying ending. My guess would be probably not. That is why this weeks list is the Essential Seven Reasons We Are Happy LOST is ending!
7) Free Up Tuesday Nights
Before LOST my Tuesday nights were filled with multiple episodes of According to Jim enjoyment. I was satisfied with this vapid television. Suddenly LOST moved to Tuesday nights and the “awesome” According to Jim show eventually disappeared. Ok, so this isn’t really true, but I wanted to add to the According to Jim hatred. I will however, be happy to have one less thing to watch during the week. LOST is the only show that I watch on Tuesdays. I will finally have a free TV night!
6) Never Watch it on DVD
I picked up the first season on DVD excited for all the special features included. However, after watching the extras I never got around to watching the actual episodes. I couldn’t commit the time. LOST has no stand alone episodes. For example, the episode “Numbers” is the first time we learn about the number combination that haunts Hurley. Interesting episode, but it doesn’t have a satisfying ending. The complexity of the show doesn’t allow a stand alone episode. That’s not a bad thing, but it keeps me from enjoying an occasional episode. I’m also afraid that the early seasons will have plot developments and explanations that don’t fit later episodes. This is still to be determined.
5) The ABC On-Screen Promos! (V Clock)
The giant, red V countdown clock in the bottom corner is just an example of the awful network advertising that tries your patience. All the networks, and some cable stations are getting bolder with the size of these ads. ABC took it to a new level though when they kept the V countdown clock on screen the entire episode! This took away my concentration forcing me to focus on the countdown, and not what was going on in the episode. This isn’t Lost’s fault. In fact Damon Lindelof tweeted his hatred of the executive who decided that was a good idea. When LOST is off the air, I will have one less hour to be bombarded with network advertising.
4) The Two Hour Episodes (too long)
First off the image above has nothing to do with the length of the episodes. It was just an excuse to post a photo of Evangeline Lilly in her underwear. Wow…..
What was I talking about? Oh length. LOST episodes are best kept at an hour. There is way to much going on in every episode to really take it all in. It’s even worse when nothing happens. Point complete. Now lets focus back on Kate in her undies.
3) Subtitles!!!!!!
I really hate subtitles. I don’t watch TV to read. I watch TV so I don’t have to read. I also tend to do other things while I watch. You can’t do that if you need to focus on what Sayid, Jin, or Sun are saying.
2) It’s Too Complex
I don’t mind complexity, but its really hard to remember who, how, and what happened season to season. The show started off with a small cast of survivors. Then we learned about the others, and Desmond with the Dharma Initiative. Nikki and Paulo then pissed us all off. Mr. Ecko, Ana, and Libby all died. Then the numbers meant something. More people came to the island. Then they left the island. Ben hid the island. Then they return to the island. Then they attempt to blow up the island….. It’s a lot to take in.
1) So We Can Finally Bitch How it Ends!
The biggest reason we are happy this show is finally ending is so we can bitch about the how it ends. For years we have been bitching that the show will not end in a good way. I have no faith that we will all be satisfied. Most big shows end badly. Seinfeld, The Sopranos, and countless other shows have kept us bitching for weeks after the final show airs. Since the first episode people have been speculating about the mysteries of the island. With the amount of complexity the writers have come up with nobody will be completely satisfied. That is why the next day at work and online, people will be bitching about how the show ended.
