As much as I was excited last week when I reviewed the Transformers Season 1 DVD, I am even more excited to review the GI-JOE Season 1.1. Both cartoons played a major part of my childhood. I owned all of the toys for both franchises. I do however think that GI-JOE was always just a bit better.
Not by much!
Once again I will get on my knees and thank Shout Factory for producing a great DVD package of GI-JOE cartoons. I never had a problem with the Rhino DVD’s except the fact that we never got all of the seasons. Hopefully Shout will release the entire series.
DVD / Packaging
GI-JOE comes in a 4-DVD box set featuring the first 22 episodes. This includes the three 5-part mini-series The M.A.S.S. Device, The Revenge of Cobra and The Pyramid of Darkness. Also included is a sheet of GI-JOE, Cobra, and Storm Shadow temporary tattoos.
Stand Out Episodes
Just like the Transformers DVD, it’s hard to find a bad episode. The season starts out with the episode “A Real American Hero” where Cobra seizes control of a new satellite and Duke is captured trying to protect it. Duke getting captured is a reoccurring event. The mini-series “The Revenge of Cobra” finds Destro building his Weather Dominator to use against the GI-JOE team. One of my favorite episodes is “Countdown for Zartan.” Cobra kidnaps a scientist and Zartan replaces him to plant a bomb that GI-JOE must discover.
Special Features
A three part interview with Ron Friedman discusses how he approached the writing GI-JOE cartoon. Also included is the 1983 Toy Fair presentation, toy commercial, and of course “Knowing Is Half The Battle PSAs.”
Overall
This is a fantastic package for any JOE Fan. I look forward to completing the series on DVD. Don’t let me down Shout Factory!
