LEGO Star Wars: Republic Attack Gunship, (7676)

I didn’t enjoy the Clone Wars movie. From the box-office results neither did most Star Wars fans. I do however really enjoy the LEGO Republic Attack Gunship.  The set has everything a LEGO fan can ask for multiple opening bay doors, fully loaded weapon assortment, and five LEGO mini-figures. This set is huge! The piece count is 1034 measuring  the final gunship 14 inches long, 17 inches wide, and 7 inches high. The building time was just under 3 hours

As you build each section of the ship you will find that there is a lot of reinforcement to keep the ship very sturdy. You begin by assembling the troop bay with two sliding bay doors on either side . The doors are well designed using a series of rotating pieces that allow the doors to not only open up, but slide to the side. The back of the the ship opens up revealing the compartment where the B.A.R.C. speeder bike is deployed. Also included in the body are a series of small compartments for weapons as well as places for the soldiers to await their deployment.

Once the ships body is complete you begin putting together the front cockpits. Here is where the set has it’s flaws. I really hate how the cockpits windows work. I constantly have trouble opening up the cockpit without it pulling it off. When it does come detached it is very difficult to attach it back on. The cockpit problem is also on the wing turrets.

The front of the ship has two small bay compartments. Behind the Kowakian monkey-lizard (Salacious B. Crumb) dropping the bomb decal is where the portable command center is stored. You can also use an optional Twi’lek Dancer decal. Next to the command center storage is where the Bacta Tank is  stored that fills with rejuvenating bacta fluid healing any Clone Trooper who is injured. The tank opens up on the top allowing the trooper to lay inside. Unfortunately, you have to bend the figure’s legs for him to fit.

The gunship’s wings is the final principal section that you complete. On either side is a small cockpit  where a Clone trooper sits.  In between the two twin engines are eight flick-fire missiles.

I love the collection of minifigures that come with the set. I will make the complaint that others have about this set with the lack of Clone Troopers. I would have liked to see this set come with four standard trips for each compartment. I would even shelve out a few extra bucks for them.

The set does come with more Jedi than I would have expected (of course they are the big draw for most). Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, Asajj Ventress, Commander Cody, and a Clone Trooper minifigure. Asajj Ventress is a very unique figure. She comes with a cloth skirt that fits over the legs and held in place by the body portion. Ventress also comes equipped with two crimson lightsabers. Commander Cody is equipped with his ARC gear 2 sets with 2 blaster pistols, 1 visor, 1 kama, 1 pauldron, 2 helmet rangefinders, and 2 helmet floodlights.

The Republic Attack Gunship is an amazing LEGO set. The ships features really make this a fun set. The opening bay door mechanism really works well. I also like that LEGO provided the option to personalize your gunship with  the Twi’lek Dancer or Kowakian Monkey decals. The new speeder bike design really allows the minifigure to sit and kneel on the bike instead of just sit. This version of the Gunship is far superior than the Episode 2 version which has a number of faults.  The set is a bit pricey, but unlike some of the expensive sets, this one is well worth it.
