Remember This? – The Urkel Dance

I’m starting a new weekly feature, Remember This? From time to time I come across something that I completely forgot about. Sometimes it might not be the most memorable moment, but in a way it is fun to remember these moments. For the first Remember This? I have chosen The Urkel Dance.

Love him or hate him Steve Urkel was huge in the early 90′s, so a dance based on Urkel’s mannerisms was a no brainer. The Urkel Dance originated in the Family Matters episode “Life of the Party.” In the episode Urkel instantly comes up with the dance and lyrics: “If you want to do the Steve Urkel dance, all you have to do is hitch up your pants, bend your knees, and stick out your pelvis; I’m telling you, baby, it’s better than Elvis!”. Of course the kids at the party instantly danced in sync without any type of rehearsal.

When the show Step by Step debuted the second episode featured a Steve Urkel cameo. The show Full House also had an Urkel cameo. In the Step by Step episode Urkel takes Al (The very hot Christine Lakin) to her school dance after she was stood up. At the dance Urkel performs the Urkel dance to liven up the dance.

Jaleel White performed the song and dance at the 5th Annual American Comedy Awards with Bea Arthur. Lucky for us the Urkel Dance craze only lasted a few weeks. Could you imagine if it was still a big dance craze? Imagine going to a wedding reception, and performing the Urkel Dance!

Look for more Urkel goodness on Friday.
