MillionairePlayboy.com continues its journey around the east coast Comic Con circuit at the ever-growing New York City Comic Con (NYCC)! ReedPOP pulled out all the stops this year to make the 2014 edition the biggest and best yet. Drawing an estimated crowd of 130,000 over 4 days, NYCC’s 2014 edition was a spectacular experience for all and with so many things to see, our crack remote team only was able to scratch the surface!
No longer just confined to the Jacob J. Javits Convention Center in Midtown Manhattan, this year’s NYCC spanned an entire week of events throughout the city for all tastes. NYCC’s inaugural “Super Week” featured activities such as: Star Talk Live! with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson; Sonic Boom to celebrate everyone’s favorite digital hedgehog and even a reunion of the Star Trek: TNG cast hosted by William Shatner.
With so many things going on, it’s easy to forgot the heart and soul of the experience at NYCC; the comics. Marvel, DC, Image, IGN, Dark Horse and a slew of other comic companies all had terrific displays with some very exciting announcements. Marvel, celebrating its 75th Anniversary, revealed its latest big event, Secret Wars, coming in 2015. For those of you not familiar with the Secret Wars of the 80s, it was truly a groundbreaking comic event blending all of the biggest brands in Marvel’s universe. We can only assume 2015’s Secret Wars will be no less stunning! Marvel also announced a potentially interesting X-Men/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover, “The Black Vortex”, and a companion comic series for Star Wars Rebels as Marvel takes over the Star Wars branding in comics. Marvel also raised the curtain on two other new comics for Ant-Man and Hawkeye coming in 2015. On a sad note, Fantastic Four will end it’s newest series in 2015. We’ll just have to wait and see what becomes of one of Stan Lee’s original creations. DC Comics was not to be outshined and celebrated a 75th anniversary of their own with Batman’s Diamond birthday. To celebrate, DC rolled out an all-star Batman panel including John Cunningham, Neal Adams, Greg Capullo, Kevin Conroy, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and Scott Snyder. I’m not sure if it’s possible to assemble a better group of creative talent to give our favorite crime fighter his due. DC also unveiled their latest and greatest collection of the original ’66 Batman television series starring Adam West with ton of extras and a Blu-ray transfer. Be sure to pre-order all 112 episodes soon, as this writer thinks it will be a hot seller. DC also announced 3 new digital comics to promote their Digital First service with Mortal Kombat X, Wonder Woman ’77 and Fables; The Wolf Among Us. With so many changes in 2013, DC kept things on track for more twists and turns in the New 52 revamp.
The panels at this year’s NYCC were exceptional featuring a host of talent from across many genres. The newly married and former Batman with nipples, George Clooney, made a surprise and early visit to this year’s con at Disney’s Tomorrowland panel. “The Death of Superman: What Happened?”, Jon Schnepp’s Kickstarter funded documentary on the ill-fated Tim Burton/Nicholas Cage Superman drew a lot of interest and gives an inside look from the creators including Tim Burton himself. Big Hero 6’s panel unveiled previously unseen footage and marks another Marvel comic making the transition to the big screen.
While the movies made an early spark, the television panels really stole the show. There have never been more comic book originated television shows on the air then right now and the panels reflected it. The footage of the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. featured an early glimpse at the upcoming 2nd season and a surprise reveal of some previously unseen footage from Agent Carter. The soon-to-be binge worthy Daredevil series coming to Netflix in 2015 also got some love and a few glimpses into what will sure to be a huge event with concurrent releases of series for Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Marvel also announced their newest cartoon, Guardians of the Galaxy, coming to Disney XD. Disney XD is now a favorite of this writer with the recently begun Star Wars Rebel animated series which also featured its own panel as the new Star Wars universe begins to unfold. DC Comics featured panels on all four of their current shows and are giving the folks at Marvel a run for their money. With the success of CW’s Arrow and Fox’s Gotham, we have high hopes for The Flash and Constantine. The Walking Dead cast (both the current survivors and many friends who have passed) unveiled footage for their upcoming 5th season. FX’s Archer had a full cast panel and showed just how much fun this group actually has making the show.
