Essential Seven Thoughts & Concerns About the New Ghostbusters Film

The Ghostbusters

The trailer for Paul Feig’s all female Ghostbusters film debuted last week to mixed reviews. Since it’s announcement, I have been very curious about if the reboot would work. After seeing the trailer, I’m cautiously optimistic. I have become numb to the idea of reboots at this point. So many films I treasure from the ‘80s have been remade. Red Dawn, Karate Kid, Poltergeist, and Robocop reboots are terrible. It was only a matter of time that Ghostbusters would be remade. As much hope that we would finally see Ghostbusters 3, I was intrigued when I heard that Paul Feig was going to remake it as an all girl team. It’s different, and Paul’s films for the most part have worked very well. I have lots of opinions about the film so far. Now that we have our first look let me empty my head, keep my mind blank, and focus on the Essential Seven Thoughts / Concerns About the new Ghostbusters Film:

Essential Seven Minor Hogwarts Students

Nigel from Harry Potter

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a huge institution filled with kids not prominently featured in the Harry Potter franchise. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville, and even Dracos all played a role in the story of the boy-who-lived defeating he-who-must not be named. What makes a character an essential minor Hogwarts student? Using both the films and books as canon, we sort out the minor versus the insignificant characters. I’m looking at you Nigel! At some point each of these characters had some sort of interaction with Harry, Ron, or Hermione. From dancing at the Yule Ball to playing Quidditch to snogging with the ginger wizard, here are the Essential Seven Minor Hogwarts Students.

Essential Seven Rejected Titles for the Third Hobbit Film

At Comicon Peter Jackson revealed that he wanted the two Hobbit films to become a trilogy. New Line jumped at the chance, and quickly made this happen. This week it was announced that the second film would be renamed to The Desolation of Smaug with the third final film titled There and Back Again. The first film will still be called  An Unexpected Journey. Having read the book, I have an idea of how the films will be structured, and it makes sense. However, I think the title The Desolation of Smaug doesn’t work very well with the other titles. The good thing is that it is far better than the Essential Seven Rejected Titles for the third Hobbit Film:

Essential Seven Movie Gods

Gods or Deities, have always played a part in movie culture (oh and books!). Whether you believe in a God or not, the concept of a being that is worshipped is depicted in many different forms. Some depictions are of the Christian GOD. Other’s are supernatural or just objects. Of course you can’t overlook the fact that some don’t believe in anything. I’m not here to judge! Obviously religion is a touchy subject. Not everybody will enjoy this list.  Trying to stay away from a religious discussion, here are the Essential Seven Movie Gods:

Essential Seven Police Academy Obligatory Moments

With the death of Bubba Smith this week, I got nostalgic, and watched a few of the Police Academy films. The humor was always juvenile, but I loved it. After an enjoyable Police Academy marathon, I was inspired to write this weeks list about the franchise. So what made up a good Police Academy film? Well here are the Essential Seven Police Academy Obligatory moments:

Essential Seven Women Who Should Be On Your Freebie List! 2011 Edition

ross

In 2009, I wrote an Essential Seven List based on the episode of Friends entitled “The One With Frank Jr.” In the episode, Ross created a freebie list; celebrities they can sleep with, without your wife or girlfriend getting upset. No consequences! A majority of the episode focused on Ross deciding who should be on his list.

Now two years later, because we are guys, we need to update that list. Ross had his list laminated not allowing it to change. We say its important to update the list.

We also want to stress: There is absolutely no condition where we would touch anyone other than our wife / girlfriend and we are disgusted at the concept. Having indemnified ourselves here is who we would bang:

Essential Seven Deathly Hallows, Part 2 Expectations

The final Harry Potter film hits theaters today, and I have a lot of expectations for this film! Over the years writers and directors have taken liberty with the source material, some good, and some bad. I understand the need to tweak certain scenes to adapt them to film. I also have some high expectations of things that can’t be screwed up. Key scenes, moments, and character development will be very important in this film. It is the last one!  That is why this week, I’ll drink a few butterbeers, and list the Essential Seven Deathly Hallows, Part 2 Expectations:

WARNING THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS. IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE BOOK, OR SEEN THE FINAL FILM, STOP READING!!!!

Essential Seven Franchise Remakes / Reboots That Worked

Early this week the trailer for the Footloose remake hit the web. The question has to be asked does a remake of a successful film from the ’80s need to be made? Obviously the answer is no. It shows the lack of creativity with Hollywood. That doesn’t mean that remakes / reboots are bad. I think some franchise’s need a good reboot in the ass. Franchise’s become stale, and need a new point of view. Remaking a previous Essential Seven list, here are the Essential Seven Franchise Remakes / Reboots That Worked:

Essential Seven Weirdest Green Lantern Corps

The Green Lantern film is finally here, and the question on every geeks mind is it good? According to Rotten Tomatoes is sucks. I’m curious what the public response will be to the film. The Green Lantern world can be very confusing, and may not play well to all audiences. With Ryan Reynolds as the star, I’m not holding my breath that it is any good.

I was a casual Green Lantern reader. I didn’t collect the books, but I was familiar with the basic story. What I didn’t know is how weird the stories got. In doing some research into the Lantern Corps, I discovered that the ring doesn’t really examine the weirdness of its bearer. With that in mind, we take a look at the Essential Seven Weirdest Green Lanterns:

Essential Seven Thoughts on the Finale of Smallville

Sorry that this list is a few weeks old. I didn’t get a chance to finish it before I went on vacation. I’m glad I didn’t because it allowed me to re-watch the finale. Smallville was overall a great show. I loved the idea of focusing on Clark and his journey of becoming Superman. I just wish it didn’t take so damn long! For years the CW has teased us, standing behind their rule of no tights, no flight! Now that the show is over I have some final thoughts. For 10 seasons I have had a love / hate relationship with the show. That love / hate relationship concluded with the last episode. I didn’t hate it, but I have a lot of things that just felt wrong. I also had moments that fueled my love for Superman. Finally happy I have an extra free hour each week, here are my Essential Seven Thoughts on the Finale of Smallville:
