Skinny Puppy at the Fillmore Silver Spring

Skinny Puppy

Words and Photos by Joshua Hoover

A day in the life of a concert photographer – The Joshua Edition. Get photopass, go through security while displaying the photo pass and unzipping all the camera gear with an impatient crowd behind, get in, find the side of the stage and then hover near the stage. When the lights go down we shooters scurry like cockroaches to the front of the stage, grab a quick snap of the set list and then take up our positions and wait. Once the band starts to take the stage start shooting like mad because after the third song ends so does the glamorous life of being inside the barrier come to a halt and we are cleared away, easy.

Lumineers drum

The Lumineers played their biggest show on their tour yet at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Friday night. The crowd ate up every minute. The quintet kicked off with Submarines and finished up with Big Parade. Click below for more pics from the show.

And a reminder they will be appearing on The Colbert Report on Monday night on Comedy Central.

Ben Folds Five Barenaked Ladies (and it was pretty fun)

Ed Robertson

Ben Folds Five and Barenaked Ladies  kept their cool for the Last Summer on Earth Tour as it coasted into the Merriweather Post Pavilion on Monday night. Temperatures were still in the high 80s even after the sun went down, but that didn’t stop the wave of hits and old favorites. Click below for more.

Updates! And I start my road to the Olympics!

Celebrity Judge McKayla Maroney

I have been busy as of late, but for good reason. Sunday I’ll be providing coverage of Lynyrd Skynrd at Jiffy Lube Live. Then Monday I’ll be covering Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds Five (with Guster) from Merriweather. Then on Wednesday I’m covering the Washington Kastles match. Tickets are still available to all of these events.

On top of that I’ve just received confirmation I’m covering the Olympic Media summit this fall, where I’ll get to meet and photograph each of the Team USA athletes heading to Sochi for the Winter Games. Stay tuned!

Of Monsters and Men at Merriweather

Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir looking right at me

Folk superstars Of Monsters and Men performed at the Merriweather Post Pavilion last night to an enthusiastic crowd. They kicked off with Dirty Paws, and because they have just one (full-length) album, the crowd knew all of their songs. Other favorites were Six Weeks, King and Lionheart, Lakehouse and of course Little Talks. Bonus points for not closing with that one, and for getting straight to the encores without any BS.
This was an amazing show, and the energy was pure and bountiful.

Click below for a bunch of pics!

Grouplove at the Downtown Countdown

Sean Gadd on bass

Grouplove, famous for their hit Tongue Tied which is currently getting stuck in your ear, rocked in the new year at the DC Downtown Countdown this week. I was on hand as the event’s official photographer and can’t wait to bring you some of the photos I shot. The biggest moment of the evening was when they decided on the fly to perform their pre-show acoustic set right on the dance floor, surrounded by fans. They bring a lot of energy and emotion to the stage (and floor) and put on a great show. Click below to check out all the photos from both of their performances below, and swing by GrouploveMusic.com for more music and tour dates.

AWOLNATION at Rams Head Live

Aaron Bruno

AWOLNATION wrapped up the American leg of their tour in Baltimore this week. I was wondering if the band would be visible drained, or would absolutely push it to the furthest they could and rock our faces off. Needless to say my face was rocked off. Aaron Bruno led the charge with flying fists and a banging head. Click below for more.

Ray LaMontagne at D.A.R. in DC

Ray LaMontagne

Soulful singer Ray LaMontagne soothed the crowd with a warm acoustic set at D.A.R. on Friday night. Ray chatted with the audience about how he came to find a label, some of the struggles along the way, and even asked for some help when he forgot the lyrics to the third verse of Empty. LaMontagne sounds amazing in person, his voice is like getting hot towels at the end of a long flight, wrapped on your soul. Or something like that. Click below for more pics.
