The Good Parts: Santa Claus The Movie

After the success of the Superman films Alexander Salkind and his son, Ilya decided to retell another origin story, Santa Claus! The film explored and answered the many mysteries of Santa Claus including how Santa came to be, how the reindeer fly, and how the elves make toys. The film was not very successful at the box office or by critics. As a kid I loved the film. As an adult I can see why adults didn’t respond to the film however, there were a few good parts:

The Good Parts: Supergirl

After buying the rights to distribute the Superman films, Alexander Salkind and his son, Ilya, also purchased the rights to the character of Supergirl. A year after Superman III, Supergirl was released. The film was a financial bomb bringing in only $35 million dollars. Critical reaction was even worse with poor reviews. The usual loyal comic book fans agreed with the critics and declared Supergirl a horrible movie. However, there were a few good parts:

The Bad Parts: Star Trek (2009)

This week we are starting a new feature called The Bad Parts. We already have a re-occurring article called The Good Parts , where we find something good in a bad film. We are now doing the opposite by finding the bad in a good film. Got that?

First up is J. J. Abrams Star Trek from last year. Surprisingly J. J. found a way to re-create the original cast of Star Trek into a new feature film. I admit I was skeptical. I still prefer William Shatner and company over the new guys, but it was enjoyable. It’s not perfect.  There are some bad parts:

The Good Parts: Poltergeist 2

Poltergeist-2-the-other-side

I watched Paranormal Activity last week, and was really disappointed.  First, was the Blair Witch Project. Then I sat through Cloverfield. Now another “documentary” type film, Paranormal Activity was awful. Why do people enjoy these films? The hype masks the fact that the film blows. The only thing that could save Paranormal Activity was if that chick took her shirt off. Sadly that doesn’t happen either.

I then thought about Poltergeist, a good ghost film. Poltergeist is still a freakin scary film twenty some years later. Sadly, part two couldn’t live up to the first film, but there were a few good parts.

The Good Parts: My Summer Story

mysummerstory06

There are a few films that should never have a sequel (or remake). When the original is so perfect, why ruin it? One of the films that fall into this category is A Christmas Story. Sadly, Hollywood couldn’t keep away and produced not one, but two sequels.  The first was a PBS TV film entitled Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss. The second sequel was originally called It Runs in the Family. The film bombed in the theaters. A few years ago the film was released under a new name My Summer Story. Neither film could capture the magic of the original. Sure, all of the characters were back, but it just wasn’t the same. That’s not to say that My Summer Story is a total disaster. There are a few Good Parts:

The Good Parts: Rocky V

rocky5

Rocky V was a huge disappointment to fans of the series. Coming off of Rocky IV, fans were eager to see who Rocky would fight next. Turns out Rocky can no longer fight, and is now poor. (thanks to Paulie’s decision of investors) So Rocky and the family return to the streets of Philadelphia. A huge struggle for the boy. Junior slowly loses respect for his father who is more interested in teaching the douche Tommy Gunn than being a father to him.

Ultimately, the film failed to live up to the previous films. A fair comparison would be to the Godfather 3. Nobody wants to watch it. Luckily, Stallone realized this, and made Rocky Balboa. A film that gave a more satisfying ending to the Rocky films.

Rocky V sucks. It never felt right. That’s not to say it was completely bad. Once and a while a something good shines through the pile of shit that is this film. So here is a list of the Good Parts from Rocky V.

The Good Parts: Batman and Robin

Batman and Robin Poster

So for a few weeks now, I have been searching for something good about Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin. Every film has something that you can say “That was cool!” However, I was over my head with this film. It was almost impossible to find something good about this train wreck. After reviewing the film I finally was able to come up with a few.  Here is my result of re-watching Batman and Robin, trying to find the Good Parts:

The Good Parts – Jersey Girl

jersey_girl

In choosing my next “bad” film searching for the Good Parts, I have decided to examine Kevin Smith’s Jersey Girl. This hurts. I love Kevin’s work. I don’t even hate this film. I’m indifferent to it. I’m not one of those haters who blasted Kevin for attempting to do something different. I just didn’t care for the film. Being a father of a little girl, I can see why he would want to make Jersey Girl. In the end, the story, and the Ollie character were the main reason I didn’t respond to the film. Not everything was bad. Here are the Good Parts from Jersey Girl:

The Good Parts: The Next Karate Kid

The Next Karate Kid

Sometimes Hollywood doesn’t know when to quit. Ok most of the time. Karate Kid III was a huge failure. Sure that movie sucked, but its only because they didn’t pick the right villain. Wouldn’t you have been more excited to see The Karate Kid III – The Revenge of Johnny?

Anyways, after the failure of part III, somebody in Hollywood thought it would be a good idea to do another sequel. This time we dump Daniel LaRusso, and have Mr. Miyagi train a girl. Of course that would work!

I have never watched The Next Karate Kid, until now. I sacrificed an hour and 45 minutes of my life to find something positive in this pile of shit. So here are the Good Parts:

The Good Parts: Austin Powers Goldmember

austin_powers_in_goldmember_ver1

It’s time once again, where I watch a bad movie in the search for something good.  Up next,  Austin Powers: Goldmember. This was the third Austin Powers film in the franchise. It was a huge financial success! It was also a huge failure as a comedy! So what went wrong? As fans we started to realize that Mike Myers never really writes new jokes for sequels. He just recycles jokes from the previous films. Of course the biggest reason the film sucked was it was way over the top. A lot of the jokes relied on (at the time) current pop-culture. Relevant at the time ,some jokes will only be funny in 2002.  Seven years later the film doesn’t stand the test of time. But let’s all forget about what sucks and focus on the Good Parts:
