Rocky V was a huge disappointment to fans of the series. Coming off of Rocky IV, fans were eager to see who Rocky would fight next. Turns out Rocky can no longer fight, and is now poor. (thanks to Paulie’s decision of investors) So Rocky and the family return to the streets of Philadelphia. A huge struggle for the boy. Junior slowly loses respect for his father who is more interested in teaching the douche Tommy Gunn than being a father to him.
Ultimately, the film failed to live up to the previous films. A fair comparison would be to the Godfather 3. Nobody wants to watch it. Luckily, Stallone realized this, and made Rocky Balboa. A film that gave a more satisfying ending to the Rocky films.
Rocky V sucks. It never felt right. That’s not to say it was completely bad. Once and a while a something good shines through the pile of shit that is this film. So here is a list of the Good Parts from Rocky V.
Rocky is Seriously Hurt
After four films, Rocky is finally seriously hurt. Drago inflicted so much damage to his brain, that it forces him to retire. While it sucks seeing the “Italian Stallion” unable to stop shaking, this was the first time we saw Rocky truly helpless.
Rocky Jr. Draws Boobs Really Well
One of the few touching moments Rocky has with his kid is when he discovers the drawing of Madame Dupont, his French teacher. The kid may be a big pussy, but he sure can draw a nice set of tits.
Rocky’s Visits Mickey’s Gym
One of the saddest moments of the film is when Rocky visits Mickey’s Gym. The building hasn’t been kept in good shape. One wonders why Rocky (when he had money) didn’t at least keep the maintenance of the gym up. Mick did leave it to Rocky in his will. The scene also reminds the audience of Rocky’s and Micks relationship. Something that was missing in Rocky IV.
Rocky Jr. is a Big Pussy
I think Rocky V‘s biggest failure was showing how much of a bad father Rocky can be. Like any “good parent”, Rocky sends his kid to the worst school district in Philadelphia. His son has been sheltered his entire life. Public schools are not a good place for Junior to be. His first day of school he is beat up and his jacket is stolen.
The Return of Father Carmine
Not seen since Rocky II, Father Carmine is still the priest at the Catholic Church. When Rocky needs a good blessing he yells for the Father outside of the church. “I love it when he does that!”
This Chicks Boobs
The Rocky films are not known for its “hot chicks.” Cleavage shots are non-existent in any of the film, until Rocky V. Duke hooks Tommy up with this big breasted chick who loves to show off her “Balboa’s!”
Rocky’s Challenge to Tommy
Let’s face it nobody liked the character of Tommy Gunn. We were all waiting for Rocky to beat the shit out him. After pushing down Paulie, Rocky had enough, and says the best line in the film.
“You knocked him down. Now how ’bout you try knockin’ me down?”
Mickeys Encouragement
This is my favorite part of the film. Rocky is down on the ground, and remembering Mickey’s words of encouragement, allows him to get up and wipe the floor with Tommy. In my opinion the scene would have been a better fit during the Drago fight in Rocky IV.
Rocky Revisits the Statue
The film ends with Rocky and Rocky Jr. walking up the steps to visit the museum. The statue is still in front where Rocky admits “I never knew there was valuable pictures in this building!”
