Toy Fair ’09 Wrap Up: This Year in LEGO

Once again, LEGO continues to amaze me with the variety of sets for this coming year.  LEGO is adding a great selection to  their existing lines, and has developed some really exciting original LEGO lines.

Star Wars
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Star Wars LEGO line. It was also the first licensed story to be brought into LEGO form. (although for me I can’t tell you how many times I built the LEGO Millenium Falcon!) This years line includes sets from the original trilogy, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  I’m most excited by the Battle of Endor bunker. Included are two speeder bikes, AT-ST, and 12 minifigures! The Echo Base set includes the first ever Taun Taun. The biggest set is the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser with numerous opening compartments, and hidden weapons.

Indiana Jones
Hasbro may have killed the Indiana Jones line, but the LEGO line is going strong. This years offering focuses on The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade. The infamous mine car chase is now in LEGO form. The pictures don’t do this set justice. It’s huge. From the looks of it the set includes Indy, Short Round, Willie, Thugee guards, and Mola Ram!

City
The City line has five new construction sets. The Crawler Crane has a moving treads, rotating boom, and is  18″ high. The theme also now includes a number of farms sets, and a big transportation theme with a bus!

Pirates
The Pirates theme has returned this year with a battle between pirates and soldiers. Captain Brickbeard and his crew have kidnapped the Admiral’s daughter holding her hostage on the new ship, Brickbeard’s Bounty. That set includes 7 minifigures, shark, and a monkey! The Kraken Attakin sets features 2 pirate minifigures stuck on a raft after their ship encounters problems.

Power Miners
The new theme Power Miners features a group of scientists exploring the under ground. They discover a group of rock monsters that shake the globe. Eight sets featuring digging machines have a new green color scheme.

Space Police
The most intriguing new theme is the Space Police! Based on the classic cops and robbers story, set in space. The design of the ships is very reminiscent of the 80’s Space theme. The intergalactic story also provides us with a lot of new minifigure alien heads and faces. Most promising is the Galactic Enforcer. The ship can break up into five separate ships!

Agents 2.0
The next wave of Agents 2.o sets are scheduled to debut in August. Dr. Inferno returns with new henchman for the LEGO Agents to stop. Most of the new sets are small, but the Aerial Defense Unit is a seriously cool looking helicopter.

Castle
The Castle set continues with the Knights battling it out with the evil trolls. This year we get a huge Troll’s Dark Fortress. The set includes giant trolls, and evil sorceress and secret traps that surround the fortress.

Bionicle
This year Bionicle starts a new chapter in the Bionicle universe. The big news is the direct to video release Bionicle movie, that features new figureines based on the film.

My sad news to report that there are no plans on producing any new Harry Potter sets. Last year I was told that the films keep  getting darker, and that  it has become very hard to produce kid-friendly sets. It’s sad because there is so much more they can do with the theme. I also was sad to see no more Batman sets. I have a feeling because they have run out of vehicles to produce.

I’m really looking forward to bringing you reviews of all these sets this year. What are you looking forward to seeing? If there is a specific set I should feature please leave me a comment.

  • The Pirate raft & Squid look great. I’m really looking forward to the Star Wars Echo Base & Endor sets. Also hoping for some more classic Disney sets like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Nautilus or maybe some Tron & Black Hole sets, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
