 UNKL Brand's UniPo Series 3 - the Cosmo-Knots
with Jager
With the third installment of UNKL's UniPo line the cute little guys are blasting off! That's right, this series is Space themed and I couldn't be happier. UNKL designs always have a bit of a sci-fi feel to them and to embrace that with this series is just something special. UniPos may not be as popular as HazmaPos; probably because the sculpt is simpler than the larger gas mask wearing brethren, but that's not to say that these aren't great little toys. UNKL designs are always detailed, graphically impressive, and a little fun. The Cosmo-Knots are no exception.
Every UniPo has the same sculpt. Big round head, short stumpy body, 4 feet, and little arms. There is a surprising 5 points of articulation at the head, arms, and wrists. The wrist twist is something that wasn't needed for the toy to be successful, but really is a nice touch. Each member of the group has a different design and color to give them each a different personality. The designs of the paint applications are really nice, especially for a mini-figure. There are some tight details (including text!) and multiple passes. However, the quality of the application was a little lacking. There were some bleeds and light spots in these. I was surprised at this because UNKL is usually so clean and precise in their designs. I would say that it is attributed to the fact that these are made in such high numbers comparatively. That being said, they still look great and especially add some dimension to your UNKL collection playing off the HazmaPos' masks and goggles.
I love how each of the UniPo is different. For example, Bar (gray) and Eek (orange) look like they have smaller heads inside a clear visor on a huge helmet, while Eck (white) and Blek (blue) have visors you can't see through. And Blek's is super shiny!! Aren't these some fun names? Each member has a specific detail as well. Maybe it's an oxygen tank or a circuit board. Or maybe you like Bar's nozzle release with the text "Secure air intake valve prior to departing craft". It's this touch of realism that really drives these designs over the edge. The mixing of fun with real-world ideas really makes these toys stand out.
For even more fun each UniPo (not just this seriesEVERY series) comes with a fortune. You're able to get such nuggets of wisdom as, "Think globally but don't forget about the basicslike washing the dishes or cleaning out the hamster cage. If you let the hamster cage go for more than a coupla weeks, it'll start stinking." Again, UNKL wants us to not lose sight that these are toys and toys should be fun, no matter how seriously collectors take them.
I really like the 3rd installment of UniPos. The Cosmo-Knots are a great series for UNKL lovers as well as the casual collector who likes space or sci-fi. I'm always looking for toys to give to my non-toy collecting friends and these fit the bill nicely. They look equally well on a computer monitor as they do in a detolf surround by an UNKL family.
