Star Trek TNG: Dr. Crusher & Wesley (Series 4)
Diamond Select Toys
by Lando da Pimp
Diamond Select Toys continues their series of Star Trek TNG action figures with series 4. The latest release includes the Season 7 Dr. Crusher and Wesley Crusher as the two standard figures, completing the main Enterprise Crew.
Two additional figures available include Beverly Picard, from series finale episode "All Good Things...". The other is of Q. It will be very difficult to find this figure, as it is short packed to 1 per case. I didn't even get one to review! On to the Crusher family:
Dr. Crusher (Season 7)
As soon as I opened up the Beverly figure I was impressed on how excellent the sculpt is. The likeness to Gates McFadden is very strong. The biggest compliment I can give is to the hair sculpt. Previous female figures from Diamond, appear to be wearing a "hat of hair."
The body sculpt is more natural looking then the Deanna Troi's figure, whose "booty" really stuck out too much. However, when the beverly figure bends over a hunk of plastic butt sticks out. The figures pose reminds me of the Buffy line. She is posed to lean more on one leg than the other.
Dr. Crusher is packaged with three accessories, a PADD, tricorder, and a hyperspray.
Wesley Crusher
Before I begin my critique of the Wesely figure, I want to plead with Diamond Select that we get a "Rainbow Outfit Wesley" from season 1. For some reason, I need to own this figure.
Poor Wesley Crusher. The character never got a lot of respect from fans. The trend continues with the new Wesley figure. The sculpt suffers from the same thing the old Playmates version does, a very bland boring sculpt. For some reason, Diamond didn't get Wil Wheaton's appearance exactly right. Hints of the characters appearence are in the face. The facial features are decent. Where I think the figure is lost is in the hair. While I don't think its ultimately a sculpt problem, I do think it has to do with the paint job. The whiteness of the skin against the dark hair feels wrong.
Wesley has four accessories, a PADD, phaser, tricorder, and his blue tube duffle bag. I found this funny that the Playmates version comes with this same accessory.
Dr. Beverly Picard
While I praised the sculpt of Season 7 Crusher, I can't say the same thing about the Beverly Picard figure. The body is exactly the same, with the exception of the paint job. The biggest problem is the head sculpt. The figure resembles a man more than an older version of Gates. I think this is because of the hair.
The paint job is very different as well. Unlike the white, pasty skin tone of season 7, Beverly Picard is very orange. Almost like she is wearing to much make-up. Beverly Picard includes a PADD, phaser and tricorder.
Overall
While I wasn't thrilled with series 4 if you compare them to the previous three series, I am very happy that the main Enterprise crew were done very well. Secondary figures like Beverly Picard and Locutus are just a nice extra. The articulation for the TNG line has been very nice for the size of these figures. Diamond was able to hide the articulation without losing total posability. These keep the bodies clean.
It seems the biggest problem I have had with any of the TNG figures is the paint job. There are a lot of inconsistencies. Your Beverly might look better then mine. If you are going to pick up this latest series, (and I recommend you do) browse through the different figures for the best paint job. This series is now available in stores.
