Diamond Select Toys' Marvel Zombies Hulk and Spider-Man by Mr. Stinkhead
If you've been on eBay recently, you've probably seen a lot of custom (OOAK!) Marvel Zombies. People are snatching up old Marvel action figures and "zombifying" them with dremmels and paint quicker than a frat boy swarms on the prospective freshman campus tours. Often these figures are sorry excuses for the zombie makeover. These "official" figures, produced by Diamond Select Toys, are the real deal.
There are three figures in this assortment, I review two, Zombie Spider-Man, and Zombie Hulk. Their display bases plug together (along with Zombie Capt. America's) to show a pitiful Silver Surfer, smashed to bits. Even though their packaging is the same size, they are in scale to each other.
The sculpt job on these figures is impressive. There are deep masterful cuts that really give the impression of dead rotting skin pealing away from stringy muscle. The paint job is good too, but the sculpt really makes these figures stand out. Posed correctly, these figures will make a great display piece. Bonus: Spider-Man's leg can pop off just below the knee, for him to hold and try to beat you with. Nice touch! I would have loved a detachable jaw on the Hulk?? Kudos to DigDeep Design and Entertainment for the sculpting on these figures.
My only complaint is that the type of plastic used makes using the joints very difficult. I had a hard time re-posing the Hulk. He's got some nice engineering, ball joints with incorporated hinges, but I just can't really use them. I say get the pose you're going for, and then leave-em. Speaking of tricky poses, it is possible to balance Spidey on one leg, holding the other one in his hand, but it takes some doing. The bases don't have pegs (which would seem helpful) but they do stand on their bases nicely among the rubble and Silver Surfer.
I haven't read the Marvel Zombie comics, but as far as enjoying the icons of Marvel, in zombie form (that was not ripped together by a middle-schooler high on paste), I'm pretty pleased.
These figures are available now from your favorite comic retailers. More information is available on where to get these from Diamond Select Toys' web site.
