MEGA BLOKS Spider-Man III
By Lando Da Pimp
The summer movie season is upon us and Spider-Man III will be the big movie of the summer. Of course with any blockbuster film there is always a toy line associated with it. Our first look at Spider-Man III toys is from MEGA BLOKS. With the age range of the toys 6 and up the sets are not quite based on exactly scenes from the film, as you will see.
Secret Lab Assult (2002)
Seeking revenge for his fathers death Harry, becomes the new Goblin. In his secret lab he creates his pumpkin bombs intended to destroy Spider-Man. The Secret Lab set is built inside a large Spider-Man head with the back of his head acting as the base plate for the set.
The 155 piece set is constructed in two levels with a pumpkin bomb making machine. On the second level is the computer terminal where Harry releases green pumpkin balls they roll down the chute into the oven converting them into orange pumpkin bombs to launch from the canon. Pumpkin bombs are loaded into the canon and released with a pull of the trigger in the back.
Check out the video of the pumpkin bomb machine work.
I liked the idea behind the secret lab. The pumpkin bomb making machine is a nice added functionality for a building set. A majority of the time the bombs follow the chutes all the way down they have a tendancy once and a while to fall off. Spider-Man and Goblin Mico Figures are included to battle it out. The Goblin (Harry) also comes with the new Goblin Glider and outfit. The glider can be attached to a transparent rod allowing you to fly him around without holding on to the glider itself.
Spider-Man Vehicles (sets 1947, 1948, 1949)
Here comes the part where the toys are clearly not based on the movies (I hope). I guess after a while Spider-Man likes to take a break from webslinging and drive his Three Wheeler, black Transporter, and of course his Turbo Jet. All three sets have a cockpit that open up to hold the Spider-Man micro figures that are included. The Black Transporter comes with a black costumed Spidey while the other two come with red costumed webslingers.
Overall
We have to remember that these sets are meant for kids so the Spider Vehicles are a bit strange. I can easily see the appeal to kids they are just a bit strange to me. The Secret Lab however is a great. The weapon making machine adds a lot of fun to the set adding to the experience of building a working machine. I am also digging the micro figures. MEGA BLOKS details on the figures are always really done well. I did have some trouble keeping the giant Spider-Man head case together with the rest of the lab. At time it broke away becoming very frustrating. However, the giant head will appeal to kids and is a great case to hold all the bloks when desconstructed.
