 Megabloks Pyrates: Dread Eye's Phantom
By Lando Da Pimp
This is by far the best building set that Megabloks has produced in years. The Dread Eye Phantom is a "ghost ship" from the Pyrates line. The details of the ship are just fantastic.
The overall story line is that the ship is carved from the ribcage of a whale. Throughout the ship a skeletal look and feel are used from the steering wheel to the masts; everything is built from bone (plastic bone). On the front of the ship is a very horrific ghostly creature that is reaching out towards the sea.
The hull contains three removable cannons that fire skull projectiles. The rear of the ship is a dungeon where the Skeleton Crew can imprison their captives by tossing them down a hole. On the back of the ship is a trap door that when opened, releases the prisoner into the ocean for the octopus to feed. Sweet
What I found really impressive were the cloth sails. Megabloks could have easily made them a soft plastic, but went the extra mile producing durable cloth sails.
The ship includes Captain Dread Eye and three Skeleton Crew members along with a Pyrate figure that you can easily make walk the plank.
Even though it only too around 15 minutes to put together, the ship is just massive when completed. If I could change anything about this set I'd make it go even larger, however at 29.5" x 9.5" x 23.5" with a 100 pieces, this is a really worth the price ($50-60). My biggest compliment to Megabloks is for the great amount of detail. Megabloks clearly paid attention to make this ship extraordinarily well designed. The skeletal elements are very horrific exceeding my usual expectations, building block system or otherwise. I could even see going out and getting the smaller sets just to get some more pirates.
