STRANGEco's Moofia by Simone Legno (aka tokidoki)
with Jager
Last year Mozzarella took bullies to school and proved that the cutie pies aren't going to be pushed around any more. Well, in case those hooligans forgot about the warning, she's calling in reinforcements. STRANGEco's rolling out the Moofia, who are a band of 8 minifigs ready to do some damage to whoever tries to steal someone's lunch money. While Mozzarella was a girly cow, these toys actually look like living milk containers from various nationalities and flavors. Cute is the word of the day here folks. I mean they are designed by tokidoki; what did you expect?
The figures are all about three inches tall averaging around Mozzarella's shoulders. The designs are just so cute it overrides the thought that these guys are supposed to be members of a group formed to bring the pain to school bullies. But that's fine, because they look so great together in a set, and will almost always make you a little happier when you look at them. The paint applications are different for each one, but in all examples the lines are clean and smooth without smudges or thin spots. The character of these toys really shows with each having a slight difference in the emotion of their faces, but some features are shared (like the full black oval eyes). I like how this gives them each a different feel, but tie them together as a line. Maybe they are all brothers and sisters. Also, each has a reference to their national origin or flavor. Soy for example has leaves instead of horns. Choco is brown (of course), one has a straw for kids, and Leche is a large angry bull. The toys are strong enough to stand alone, but they really shine when you have a full set surrounding their leader, Mozzarella. The plastic used in production is sturdy but light: think Qee not Dunny. The only problem I have with the toys is that they have some trouble standing up. I wish they would have had thicker legs or possibly a third to support them. The taller ones especially have trouble staying up on their two legs. But that being said, a few of the more tippy ones have tails to help out with some extra support from behind. All in all, these are some fun minifigs that are sure to get a smile and as long as the surface is level and doesn't get bumped too much, they'll be fine. Added 4/23: STRANGEco sends word that they are just starting a second production run of the Moofia which should be shipping in June or July, and there have been modifications to the tooling of the legs so that there isn't a seam at the sole of the foot. So this should definitely help with the standing issues.
The packaging is great and fits the fun nature of the series perfectly. Each box looks like a milk carton complete with a "Have you seen me?" picture of Mozzarella on the back. This really catches your eye in the store, and fits the fun, cute nature of the series.
STRANGEco hasn't made too many blind boxed toys, but when they do they are some great pieces and worth seeking out to find the entire set. These toys are no exception. They look fine standing alone, but while I am far from a completist, the Moofia really shines when they stand as a group. And if you don't have Mozzarella you'll need to find her because the entire crew really is a fun series to have.
STRANGEco always has something sweet cooking in their pot of vinyl. Check out their site for a peek on upcoming projects, a look at the best from the past, and a sweet blog with some great links.
Simone Legno, or tokidoki, has a site with more info than you can read in one sitting on the artist and his various projects from toys, to handbags, to jewelry and more. You can pick these up at kidrobot.com but since they're blind boxed, you never know what you'll get!
