New pics added! 5-22-06
Mine eyes have seen the glory. A few days ago our good friend Bobbi from Raving Toy Maniac sent me a news article. The jist of the article is that a big time (no seriously, big time) playmobil collector was unloading his very large collection, consignment style at a store in Fredricksburg VA, about 1.5 hours south of my house. All vintage. 95% mint in box. Here is the full article. In all there are about 3000 boxes, and they have a 90+ page price list to sort through. Some of the earliest playmobil ever is there, and even exclusives from other countries.
When I arrived at Quilts and Treasures, it was evident I was in the right place as every free corner of shelf space had rare, vintage playmo squeezed in. Behind the counter was an impressive couple of stacks of individual figures, most these sets are all from 1976-1979 (roughly). A walk through the store turned up troves of sets I had only seen in the Collector Book (second printing coming soon!) There was even a set created for the Sears catalog that didn't have any playmobil markings on it.
The owners were gracious enough to take me to the reserve to see all the items that had yet to be sorted or priced. Remember the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark? Yeah. We were looking at over 2000 boxes (this didn't include all the items already on display in the shop). Every time I thought I saw something so rare, and so pristine, that I'd mortgage my house, I saw something even rarer or better condition. I felt like Daffy Duck when he gets socked upside the head. (more convulsing, less spitting)
Not much is known about this anonymous collector beyond what is in the article. I am curious to know if he kept anything, and what that set is. But I'll tell you this, he didn't open much of anything, and they're all in great condition.
I also met up with Jeff from Figures.com for lunch. I showed him some of the offering, and if I "water the seeds" correctly, we could have a new playmobil fanatic on our hands. Which is good, but bad, because he lives closer to this store than I do.
If you are serious about asking the fine owners of Quilts and Treasures a question, you could e-mail them here. But they do have an overwhelming list of inquiries, so please be patient.
Be sure to check out more of our playmobil coverage. Also, if you like looking at pictures of thousands of vintage toys (from the 70s & 80s), check out my photo gallery of Lulu Berlu.
By all means, if you know something about one of these items you'd like to add, let me know the picture number and I'll pop it in!
And now you can check out the stuff I actually took home. View my haul.
