Angel: Angel & Cordelia 12" Figure
by Lando Da Pimp

Sideshow Collectables follows up with their amazing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” toy line with Angel Joss Whedon’s spin off show, starring David Boreanaz. The first two figures released from the line are now available, Angel and Cordelia Chase.

Click meAngel (from the episode City of Angels)
Before he was cursed with a soul by gypsy’s, Angel, was known as Angelus the vampire with the Angelic face. The most ruthless vampire ever known Angelus, Darla spent a century reeking havoc all over the world. Being cursed with a soul forced Angel to remember and live with his past actions of violence and never know what true happiness is.

To make up for his past Angel helped the newest Slayer Buffy Summers fight evil over the Hellmouth. Achieving ultimate happiness by sleeping with Buffy his true love turned him back into Angelus forcing Buffy to stake Angel.

When the powers that be resurrected Angel he fled to Los Angeles knowing that he could never be with Buffy. He started Angel Investigations where he fought for good against the evil Wolfram & Hart. With the help of Cordelia and Doyle they battled evil in Los Angeles a city overpopulated by demons, warlocks, vampires, and evil lawyers.

This is the fourth version of Angel / Angelus that Sideshow has produced. The first for the Sideshow “Angel” line. Based on the first episode “City of Angels” the figure is the best of the four figures, though very similar to the first version.

The new head sculpt looks more like David this time however I don’t think they have gotten the hair just right. It’s still too big. There is also something odd with the eye color. David’s eyes are a very dark brown color the figure’s eyes are red creating a strange effect on the eyes.

Click meThe fully articulated body with 30+ points of articulation is covered in Angel’s trademark black leather clothing. A nice touch with the leather pants. The paint job on the shoes is very good. I am a bit sad to see that the rings in the initial product shots are not on the figure. These little details are what Sideshow is known for.

It wouldn’t be a Sideshow figure without some great accessories. Under his sleeves are twin wrist-mounted stakes. You can easily cover up the stakes with the jacket sleeve but they don’t retract. A sword, axe, and wooden stake are also included with a display stand with the Angel logo printed on the base.

Click meCordelia Chase (from the episode "Your Welcome")
After graduating from Sunnydale High School where she helped Buffy defeat the dark forces she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Playing to be a successful actress she meets up with Angel at a party happy to see a familiar face. After being saved by Angel from a vampire producer she along with Doyle help Angel start Angel Investigations, dedicated to helping people in trouble, usually located by visions sent to Doyle by the mysterious and semi-divine Powers That Be.

During the first mid season Doyle who is about to die transfers his visions to Cordelia who now must carry on his role as Angel’s seer. However being human the visions take a toll on her causing her pain and suffering to the point that she almost dies. She is saved when she is turned into a demon.

In the third season finale she is ascended to a higher plane to do more good as a higher being. When she returns she is not the same and dies after giving birth to Jasmine. But, before she goes she pays Angel one last visit in the episode “Your Welcome” in the form of a spirit.

If I had to pick my favorite character from Angel it would easily be Cordelia. I loved her in Buffy and like many characters from the Buffyverse Joss allowed her to evolve over the seasons.

The figure is based on the beautiful Charisma Carpenter and I am happy to finally say that this is the closest resemblance to her in toy form. Diamond Selects figures really have no resemblance to her, but leave it to Sideshow to get it right. That’s not to say that it is perfect but it was a good decision to sculpt her from the “Your Welcome” episode. Over the course of the series, Cordelia, changed her hair consistently from short to long. I am glad they decided to model her with the longer hair as it works better on the figure.

Like Angel, the body has 30+ points of articulation. The body however is not to Cordelia’s proportions if you know what I mean. I would have loved to see Sideshow customize the bodies of the 12” lines. Cordelia / Charisma’s bust is significantly larger than what the figure depicts.

Click meIf you watch the episode “Your Welcome,” you will see that Sideshow has got her outfit down perfect right down to the wristband on her left hand. The biggest problem is with her pants. They won’t stay up! I wish this was a problem on the show itself but sadly it only happens on the figure. To create the more feminine look they used low cut pants. The pants however won’t stay up if you move her legs around. As I was photographing the figure I had to keep pulling them up over the waist of the body. She needs a belt!

Cordelia’s accessories are on the light side. She comes with a katana sword and sheath that fits easily into her right hand. She also comes with interchangeable hands for some reason. The oddest accessory is she also comes with her slightly burned high school diploma. The details are really cool with the singed corners and its even signed by principal Snyder! I’m not sure why Sideshow included the diploma. Nice accessory but not really anything to do with the episode on which the figure is based.

Overall
The Angel line is at a great start with first two figures. Up next is Lorne, which you can pre-order now. My hope is that we will eventually see the first Charles Gunn figure. You can probably expect to see Wesely and Fred however Doyle and Harmony would also be a great addition for the line. I fear however that we will see another Spike figure representing his appearance in season 5.

The head sculpts are good on both Cordelia and Angel. Both have short necks and big hair that at times looks out of proportion. The details on Angel are not as good as I had hoped. The missing rings and lack or retractable wrist stakes are disappointing. I can’t complain about the details on Cordelia. She is pretty much what I expected from the initial photos. Overall, I don’t think you will be disappointed with either figure. Hopefully, we won’t be disappointed with the figures to come.

Sideshow has a second chance to order Angel you can pick him up here You also can order Cordelia Here
