We asked toy photographer Brian McCarty to check out the Spazz: Illustration show in Hollywood, hosted by the folks at Achy Breaky Toys. He took over his old Polaroid camera, and a hunger for free beer, and this is what we got:
Ok, through the haze of free Budweisers poured into me and my alcohol tolerance that has only gone down with age, I'll do my best to give you some impressions of the opening.
It was by and large one of the best I've been to in a very long time. The work of SPAZZ (Mike Echlin) is very fresh, sexy, and grabbing. There were a number of paintings that I found myself unable to take my eyes off of. It is no wonder that Achy Breaky and SPAZZ have come together to create what looks like is going to be an amazing figure.
The early stage prototype was unveiled at the event, based off of the painting "Scuba." Again, I'll reference the alcohol consumption in defense of why I didn't get a shot of the work. Just look at the prototype, add glitter to the facemask, and make it a lot bigger in your mind. Trust me when I say that even with this early version of the figure, they have captured the look and more importantly the feel of SPAZZ's brand of woman.
Aside from the amazing work on the walls and the unbelievable sneak peek at the upcoming figure, the opening was worth being at for the killer crowd of people it brought together. From skaters, to musicians, to artists, to toy freaks like me, I met some great people. DJ Dusk spun a killer soundtrack to the event. The entire Achy Breaky crew was on hand and amazingly fun to hang with. And Spazz himself proved to be not only a great artist but a great guy too.
With his unique vision and Achy Breaky's gift for capturing and creating art with plastic, I know that the Scuba figure will be finding a prominent spot in my collection. I look forward to seeing the final version!
Thanks a lot,
-B
An opening attendee can't stop staring at the painting "Paris." It sold within the first few minutes of the opening.
Still early in event, people are still slowly trickling in.

There was a great mix in the crowd from artists to skaters to musicians.

she mixed great drinks at the after party.
SPAZZ, Melissa, and a whole bunch of people that free Budweisers kept
me from remembering their names.
