Mattel's Superman Returns S3

Win a super pack of Superman Returns toys! Details
Mattel has unleashed a mighty Kryptonian-level blast of Superman Returns related figures to get us Super-fans geared up for the new movie coming out June 15. You read our review of the RC Flying Superman, and as we photograph the other action figures and role playing toys, let me show you the S3Select Sculpt Series. However I think they went with S as to really pump the Super brand.
Yes, the 200 pound kryptonian in the room is that these are similar in theme
to Hasbro's Star Wars Unleashed line, in that it's
slightly larger than their normal figure size, the sculpt
is ultra detailed and dynamic, and there is little to no
articulation. These are intended for collectors, and belong
on your shelf, not in the sticky dried popsicle hands of
your local ankle biter.
First thing I want to recognize is the beautiful sculpt by our favorite design house, the Four Horsemen (of Masters of the Universe fame). Both of these figures are very fluid and stoic. I like the statuesque look and feel. The capes, in particular, are striking. I think this homage to the ultimate power (not real ultimate power, but I digress) of the legend of Superman is more important than a crazy uber-hyper pose or special effects.
I also love the fine detail. The texture on his suit, the way the repelled
bullets are flattened, and the sculpt on the miniature city
is fantastic. I love the colors and level of gloss. I wouldn't
have this any other way. I think I have to see the movie
to really see if the likeness of the face matches Routh's,
but overall, this is clearly Superman. The myth, the legend,
the defeater of Zod [Ed note: Sorry! Didn't mean
to bring that up, oh Wonderful Overlord, granter of mercy
and protection!]
I think customizers will rejoice in that Supes is removable from the
bullet ridden base. I love how there's an (almost) person
shaped stencil where none of the bullets made it through.
The texture and detail on this base are just superb, and
will really spruce up photos of any of your custom creations.
These are like a more affordable version of the DC Direct statues, and more adult-oriented action figures than the standard assortment. I think the marriage here is perfect, and would love to see more. That and I have a terrible obsession with Kate Bosworth from Blue Crush, one of the defining cinematic events of the 21st century.
