Super7's Valentine's Day Visighost by Brian Flynn
with jager
This Valentine's Day treat yourself or a loved one to a little haunting pleasure. That's right forget those boring roses, unhealthy chocolates, and silly candy hearts (am I really "so fine") and do the holiday justice with some delicious clear vinyl! Brian Flynn's newest creation for Super7 is ready to be your date on the 14th, but don't leave him waiting because he's a popular guy and won't wait around for long.
The newest member of the Ghostland family is sporting his Valentine's best translucent pink and waiting for a hot date. He has maroon and white details showing select organs and bones, which look great against the pink. It's not as bold as the Holiday Spirits colorway, and I think it looks a little nicer muted this way. And to set the figure off, there are two shiny pipe cleaners inserted in the form: One from the left leg through the right arm, and another opposite that. These add a great dimension to the toy, and it's always interesting when there is something inside the clear vinyl. Also, I played with this guy pretty rigorously and the pipe cleaners didn't kink or slide out of place, so no worries there. Speaking of play value, he sports four points of articulation: the neck, arms, and waist. Just enough for some fun poses, but not too much to distract from the form. Joints are hard to hide when the medium is clear! The vinyl used is a softer vinyl than most Western designer toys, and it feels really great. It's hard to explain. There is just a feeling to holding a softer vinyl toy like this that just feels right.
Honestly, I haven't had this much fun with a toy in a long time (not counting my son and his Mr. Potato Head). There is something about this toy that takes me back to my roots as a toy collector: toys are fun. Now, I'm not discrediting companies who make more delicate art toys by any means. Those are amazing studies, but there's something to be said for a toy that you can plunk down on your table without worry, or take out into the snow for some fun times. What Brian has done has created a little world with the Ghostland toys that just feels happy. These guys are enjoying their afterlife, and reminding us to enjoy our lives too!
In true Eastern fashion, the Visighost comes in a bag with header card. This reinforces the notion to take the toy out and play with it. It's much easier to sit a box on a shelf and leave a toy in there, but this guy is in a bag, come on and bust him out for some fun!
The only place you can get the Valentine's Visighost is from Super7 on February 14th, 2008 at 11am PST. They will be available for phone orders and in their online shop shortly after in store patrons are served. So don't be left without a date this year (we won't ask about last year)! In my opinion, this is the best version of the Visighost so far, and is sure to sell out.
Even if you miss the boat on the 14th, you should check out Super7's site for lots of other Japanese vinyl goodness. Plus there is a print sale going on right now!!
Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the contest going on at Super7's messageboard, Skullbrain.org. Check this link for all the information you need to enter to win this one-of-a-kind Visighost! Totally clear pink. No spray. Now, that's a clean toy!
