NY Comic Con 2008
with Skip Protection
Comic Book Fans Assemble! Millionaire Playboy's exclusive NYCC coverage continues with some quick hits from all of the different comic book publishers. Now, ole Skip Protection was blown away by the amazing amount of new material on the way this summer and fall for comic book lovers of all types. Let's get started.
The booth was buzzing with a flashy display for the new Hellboy movie, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army due in theaters on July 11, 2008. In addition to some exciting panel discussions with the cast and crew of the new movie, the Dark Horse booth featured a terrific looking demo of the videogame based on HB2. Keep your eye out for that game on XBOX360 and PS3 this summer.
Dark Horse also has a great line-up of comics coming to you this year. The Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) series continues to build the mythology of Hellboy with the conclusion of the B.P.R.D.: 1946 series and the launch of B.P.R.D.: War on Frogs AND The Warning series. For the Joss Wheldon fans, the recently started Serenity series looks fantastic and should keep all of us missing Firefly a little bit less each issue. Dark Horse is also launching a new Conan line of comics this July with Conan the Cimmerian. Finally, keep a look out for Rick Remender and Mat Broome's The End League, a new series which describes the rich story of Earth's last heroes. It has all the makings of a new Dark Horse classic.

DC, Vertigo and WildStorm the DC Comics Trifecta had a strong showing at this year's NYCC. DC certainly brought out a star-studded line-up of artists to sign autographs for the fans and really focused on their print media as opposed to hyping that small film coming out later this summer. My personal favorite Batman author, Grant Morrison, signed autographs for fans on Sunday. Morrison is currently working on Batman R.I.P. which ties together his earlier work with Batman as only he can. Keep your eye out for this sure-thing buy in May. DC also is pulling out all the stops for Final Crisis which will bring together practically the entire DC universe of characters in an epic conflict between good and evil. To get ready for this summer's hot series, be sure to grab DC Universe: Zero on April 30th to gird yourselves!
If you are a fan of the Batman movie franchise reboot staring Christian Bale, the latest Batman installment, The Dark Knight, toy tie-ins look amazing and fans were certainly buzzing about the new film.
Vertigo and WildStorm are generating more and more great titles this summer. Vertigo brings a great stable of artists to bear with House of Mystery which will feature Bill Willingham (Fables) and Matthew Sturges (Jack of Fables). House of Mystery will revisit the franchise and provide readers with chilling tale of guests who must reveal a story in what might be set in Hell. Also, check out Vertigo's new series, Young Aces, which will be reviewed on Millionaire Playboy this week. It's a fast-paced, boy meets girl, girl kicks ass and boy falls harder tale.
WildStorm's big NYCC announcement was the top secret "World's End" event coming this summer. According to our sources, a host of re-visioned series will launch following this hush-hush apocalypse such as Wildcats and The Authority. Also, I'm very excited about the new licenses that WildStorm is working on such as the X-Files, World of Warcraft and Chuck.
For those of you who are fans of the Alan Moore's seminal work, Watchmen, you can rest assured that the film is faithfully recreating his vision. The DC Direct display prominently featured our comic anti-hero Rorschach, along with Night Owl, which are slated to go on-sale in January 2009. Only 11 short months until the movie hits theaters on March 9, 2009.

Image comics continues to be one of the best independent comic book companies out there. The flagship for Image continues to be their properties like Spawn, Invincible and Witchblade. At this year's NYCC, Image featured several series which look promising. Claudio Sanchez (Coheed & Cambria's lead singer) has taken his hard charging rock n' roll storytelling to a new series, Amory Wars. Amory Wars' first issue can be downloaded for free at TheAmoryWars.com. Another title to check out is Mark Smith & Paul Maybury's Aqua Leung which is a new series beginning this month that features a boy named Aqua who learns his true origins and must return to father's realm to unify his underwater kingdom. Finally, I am currently preparing a review of Popgun Vol. 1 which is a mixed tape of short stories with amazing depth and variety. More on this coming soon.

The Skrulls invasion is no longer a secret! Marvel's booth had a great deal to offer this year and comic book fans received a sampling of the Secret Invasions nemesis, those pesky, shape-shifting Skrulls in the form of a card board mask for fans to wear. Marvel has been sowing the seeds for the new Secret Invasion comic for many months across a variety of titles. Also, fans should keep a look out for New-Gen series, a completely new property which Marvel is publishing this summer.
As we all know, this summer will feature two major Marvel characters on the big screen. Greeting visitors was a giant Incredible Hulk statue to celebrate the release of the new Hulk movie starting Ed Norton which features a return to the Hulk's man-on-the-run image from the television show. For those of you who are Hulk fans, the new trailer was displayed and looked terrific. Iron Man is the other major franchise receiving a movie makeover and opens in next week. The Marvel booth featured a demo of the corresponding Iron Man game for PS3 and XBOX.

Virgin's mega-entertainment empire is bringing in some really interesting things to the fold for comic readers. Virgin combined top artistic talent with celebrity power to create such titles as Shadow Hunter (Jenna Jameson), Nowhere Man (Hugh Jackman) and Voodoo Child (Nicholas Cage). Virgin recently announced that the one and only Stan Lee would be collaborating in the near future to create a superhero universe exclusive to Virgin in the summer of 2009. One of Virgin's current series that I enjoy already is Dan Dare created by Garth Ennis. It is a modern day space adventure series the likes of Flash Gordon and continues to get better and better.
