Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zeroes at 9:30 Club

Reaches out

You have probably heard their song Home and whistled along. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes performed to a sold out crowd at 9:30 Club in Washington DC on Tuesday night. Click below for more pics from their set!
Alex Ebert

Leads Alex Ebert and his girl Jade Castrinos are joined on the stage by eight other musicians and jam their way through highly infectious, danceable hippie rock. There’s an edge of experimentation, yet a handle of familiarity and certainty. The crowd sang along to favorites such as 40 Day Dream and of course Home but we were excited to hear new songs off of their upcoming album Here to drop on May 29th.

The number one thing I was taken by was the vibe of the audience. Mainly mid-twenties of the hippie variety, there wasn’t a shred of hostility anywhere to be found. Alex was frequently reaching out to the crowd to grasp hands and saying hello. He talked with several people up front throughout the show. I also loved the “we’re here to make some music and have fun” attitude coming from the Magnetic Zeroes. Though they totally had their act together (so to speak) they conversed on stage about which song to do next and where to stand. I really got the impression they were just as excited to be there performing for us and were glad we finally made it to see them live.

Halo

I also loved the onstage chemistry between lovebirds Jade and Alex. They’re a real couple, and they were whispering to each other and nuzzling throughout the set. I wondered beforehand if it would be too lovey-dovey or showey and forced, but it all felt natural and real, it was a joy to see them (and hear them) live. This is probably the closest to a 60s love-in that I’ll ever get to these days. The funny thing about the evening was that it felt all free-form and improvised in its fluidity, but everything went off without a hitch (including their performance of Home wrapping juuuust before the last metro departed the nearest station, so we could get home alright).

Check out my photos below, and swing by the Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros website for more tour dates and get ready for their new album, Here, in two weeks.
