Essential Seven Back to the Future Minor Characters

As Marty traveled through time we were introduced to some really funny, sometimes exaggerated, minor characters. They may have only been on screen for a few minutes, if at all! However, some of them play a major role the development of the character of Marty. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original film, we take a look at the Essential Seven Back to the Future Minor Characters:

7) 3D

3-D is a member of Biff’s gang from high school. He is probably the most recognizable because of his 3-D glasses fashion choice. Along with fellow gang members Match and Skinhead they help terrorize Hill Valley High. He is also a known raciest overheard calling Marvin Berry a  “spook.”

6) Biff’s Grandmother

Though never seen, we sure did hear hear her. Her  shrill voice (performed by Tom Wilson) is enough for anybody to leave and stay away.

5) Goldie Wilson

Before Marty traveled back in time Goldie was working at Lou’s Café. Goldie believed that he was destined for something great. Marty knows that in 1985 he will be mayor of Hill Valley one day, and lets him know. Goldie likes the idea, even though Lou objects. The question you have to ask is would Goldie have become Mayor if Marty had not traveled back in time?

4) Saloon Old Timers

Every bar has those guys who seem to never leave. In Back to the Future III the Hill Valley Tavern has three of them. The saloon old timers do nothing but sit back, drink whisky, and make snide comments. Their inclusion in the film provides  great comic relief.

3) Marvin Berry

Marvin Berry plays an important role in the history of Rock N’ Roll. Watching Marty perform “Johnny B. Goode” Marvin instantly realizes that this is the sound his cousin Chuck has been looking for. So the question you have to ask is, who really invented rock n’ roll?

2) Clock Tower Lady

She might be pushy, but she is dedicated to the cause of saving the clock tower. Marty owes her a lot. If it wasn’t for her love of history he would not have the knowledge of exactly when the clock tower was struck by lightning.

1) Needles

Needles was introduced briefly in Back to the Future II as Future Mary’s boss who convinces him to to join in on an illegal scam to make a quick buck. This gets future Marty fired. In Back to the Future III we discover that Needles also is responsible for goading Marty to drag race. Unable to ignore being called chicken Marty crashes into a rolls royce injuring his hand keeping him from ever playing guitar again. Of course Marty learned that he should not be so easily persuaded and changes his own history. I think we all remember asking ourselves “Why is Flea playing the role of Needles?”

Honorable Mention:Verne Brown

A special honorable mention goes to Verne Brown. He doesn’t speak a word, but watch closely and you will see him give a “come on” motion and gesture towards his crotch. What is he trying to tell us? Is he giving us a clue to what is going on in that train? Does he just find Jennifer cute? In the end, he is just a kid who probably had to pee.
