Flogging Molly at Fillmore Silver Spring

Tuesday night was the perfect time to grab a pint, put on your scally cap and head to Silver Spring for Flogging Molly. The Irish punk, celtic, pub band was back in town for the Green 17 2013 tour supporting their latest release “Speed of Darkness.” That night at the Fillmore Silver Spring the lights were bright and the crowd was roaring. The band leisurely took the stage but from that point on the energy from the guys and gal was turned all the way up to 11. For the next 2 hours Flogging Molly injected energy
and passion into the audience. Songs relating to sordid parts of Irish history to the more recent somber and angry modern times infused the crowd and before you knew it time had run out.

The band played songe from throughout their catalog, especially “Within a Mile of Home” which is a favorite of this photographer. What was nice is that the band didn’t play that ‘will they or won’t they’ with the encore. They all left the stage long enough to catch a breath, towel down briefly and then they were back up jamming away. When the last note had been played the quintessential concert happenings took place, drumsticks were tossed to the crowd, picks were flung, and a couple drum heads were flown to eager hands. All this happened while the last song of the evening was airing over the speakers, “All Ways Look On The Bright Side Of Life.” And
what made that moment more enjoyable was watching the band lip sync and dance to the lyrics versus removing themselves from the stage to hide away. You can tell they savored the last drop of stout left in the can and weren’t quite ready to don the scally before heading off into the
already set sunset. This was a group who loved what they were doing.
