Pittsburgh Comicon ’09

This past weekend was the ’09 Pittsburgh Comicon. This years big guest was Stan Lee. Sadly he was only on there on Saturday, and I was unable to attend the show until Sunday, so I missed the great one. However, I did meet some great artists that I want to share with you.

I met Joe Dunn and Phil Chan who are two of the creators of the web comics published by Digital Pimp. They gave me a copy of their comic book Tales From the Pimp that is an anthology of their comics Free Lunch, Matriculated, Fish Tank Tango, and Retail Rage. Check out their site, I really enjoy the strip Joe Loves Crappy Movies. Each strip is a short humorous review of crappy movies.

Geek Boy Press
Geekboy’s work is cartoon creations of pop-culture characters. He features his work in comics, t-shirts, and prints. I bought a Soundwave and Princess Leia small print from him.

I didn’t get a chance to meet with Danielle Corsetto the creator of Girls With Slingshots. She produces a daily web comic that features two girls, a bar, and a talking cactus named McPedro.

I also met Shawn Atkins and Seth Fronzoli, creators of Explorers of the Unknown. Shawn also produces the webcomic series Gello Apocalypse.

Other events at the show included a Quick Sketch that allowed you a chance to win their original artwork. (I didn’t win). The Star Wars Association of Pittsburgh sponsored a Creating Your Own Custom Figures and Props panel. On Sunday, a Costume Contest was held along with a martial arts demo from Taimak from The Last Dragon.

The Pittsburgh Comicon is not as big as some of the other city cons, but it is a great opportunity to meet some of your favorite comic book writers / artists. You can also meet some of the independent artists. The 2010 Pittsburgh Con was announced for April 23 – 25th. Early guest announcements include Nalini Krishan and Delmot Crowley from the Star Wars films, comic book artists Jim Balent and Monte Moore, and Margot Kidder.
