LEGO's Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban Hogwarts Castle
by Lando da Pimp
With the release of the new Potter film The Prisoner of Azkaban, LEGO, releases a new Hogwarts Castle home to the School of Hogwarts Witchcraft and Wizardry. This is the second castle set that LEGO has offered along with additional smaller sets of the Hogwarts School. The newest set can be an addition to the previous Potter sets or can stand on its own and stand on its own it does.
The Secrets of Hogwarts
LEGO has made sure that castle set contains all the secrets of Hogwarts. Throughout the castle are secret passages, compartments for storing items, and, little elements to help enhance the mystery of Hogwarts. Looking at the castle from the back you will notice the two staircases. These magic stairwells move together to provide access to the upper levels of the castle just like they do in the books and movies.
A series of gears and a wind-up motor raises the front gate while swinging the clock pendulum and rotating the clock on the exterior. As the pendulum swings back and forth, a string slowly raises the gate at the front door. The gate can be lowered back in to place with the simple release of a LEGO piece.[Ed note: mildy trance-inducing]
In Harry and Ron's room are two beds for them to sleep with compartments to store their books. The beds swing out providing a larger area for the characters to interact with. On the desks are a variety of bottles to store potions.
>Other secrets are a classroom blackboard that swivels around revealing a hidden skeleton. A secret door gives access from the outside into the dungeon. And one of the coolest details is the rotating skull under glass.
This set Includes Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Professor Dumbledore, Professor Trelawney and 2 Dementors. The Dementors are exceptional. They have a green skeletal structure covered in a fabric cape. The cape that covers their body makes it appear as if they are floating. All of the characters are now flesh toned and have their own unique facial expression. My favorite facial expression is Ron Weasley's puzzled look.[Ed note: you know, the face you see when you threaten to drop an angry cat down someone's pants... at least that's what it is in the movies.]
What can you say about a set that contains so many details? This set provides everything a Harry Potter fan would want from a Hogwarts set. The device that swings the pendulum and raises the front gate is a great motorized action that gives the set a unique addition. The build time for this set was about two hours but you can easily spend three times that amount playing around with all the secrets this castle provides.
