Play Along Toys' LOTR: Armies of Middle Earth
photos by Mr. Stinkhead

Thanks to Play Along Toys for sending over this assortment of AOME Wave 2 figures. We're really impressed at how this line is shaping up. The sculpts are just as strong if not stronger than the previous figures, and this wave fits seamlessly with the previous figures. However there is still evident growth in their attention to detail and paint apps.

Wave II Ringwraith
This thing is beautiful. I'm a big fan of the original Ringwraith figure from this line. The horse is stalking slowly, the Wraith readying for attack. This figure, the steed is animated, the flowing robes convey the energy and movement perfectly. The detail and paint apps are just unbelieveable. The other horseback figures are completely removeable, this one is attached to the reins. This is one of my favorites so far.

Wave II Legolas and Gimli
Gimli is one of my favorite characters, and the folks at Play Along nailed his likeness perfectly. This is clearly Gimli, no doubt about it. Even his braids are painted. Legolas looks good too. 20,000 13 year old girls concur. Both figures can come completely off the horse. I wish for a peg, similar to those used on the bases, for keeping Gimli on the back, but he does sit nicely if you leave him be. The detail and paint on this one blew me away.

Uruk-Hai 3 Pack
These guys are incredible. If you liked the Battering Ram Uruk-Hai, then you'll love these. They all have dynamic poses, ready to strike. I love the little head that one of them is holding proudly. They also each have a moveable arm or two for additional poses.

Merry, Pippin & Boromir
These silly little Hobbits. And Boromir... they're funny! Merry and Pippin are in scale to the other Hobbits, and I like how Merry's base has the log on it. Change it up a bit. I have to comment on Boromir's dirty clothes. The mud splatter is the most realistic I've seen on a toy, much less one of this scale. It truly looks filthy.

Warg Rider
The Sharku with Warg was my favorite rider last wave. The sculpt, detail and pose were just perfect. This new Warg rider is no exception. I'll point out that I had a little trouble getting the Warg on the base, and in fiddling with it, the rider is not settled in the saddle all the way. Oh yes, the rider is completely detachable, and his feet pop into the stirrups like Britney at the gyno. However, if you have him seated all the way, a tuft of Warg hair in his fist will match up perfectly with the mane on the Warg.

Rohan Rider
You've heard me say before that I really like the gross and disgusting characters more than the human-esque figures. However you will not believe the detail on this guy. He even has proportionate pupils. I've seen pupils attmepted on figures of this size by lesser toy makers, and they screw it up. His are unbelievably good.

Twilight Frodo 3 Pack
Though they're exclusives and not part of Wave II, I just got these fellas so I'm sticking them in. The Ringwraiths are sweet, the other wraiths I have are on horse back, so it's cool seeing these guys lurching around. They convey the personality of the movie wraiths and appear to be able to start creeping around as soon as you turn your back and take hallucinogenic drugs that make inanimate objects appear to move.

Fights!
So when you have Armies of Middle Earth, they need to fight. I love setting these guys up in the midst of battle [Ed note: These aren't fights as much as they are painful attempts at humor].
