click for larger Mezco's Goon Series One
by Jager

Mezco continues to tear up Dark Horse's comic franchises with style. This time with a line of action figures based on Eric Powell's the Goon. YouBuyNow sent over the entire line (sans chase) for review, and I'm impressed. Each figure has its own personality and accessories that are covered below, but the entire line has some solid features worth mentioning first. Mezco did a great job in depicting Powell's art in 3-D form. I don't know how closely the sculptor worked with Powell, but I bet he was impressed with the outcome. The figures are rotocast vinyl and have a nice feel to them: heavy and solid. There are as many details as the original drawings call for, and the paint apps are nice and clean. Like I said, I'm impressed. Mezco has really done a nice job.

The Goon is a hulk of a guy. The one guy in town you don't want to mess with and his figure shows this perfectly. His huge arms have veins sculpted in, and he looks like he might rip through his pants with his huge thighs at any minute. The sculpt is really impressive with texture on his wife beater shirt, scuff marks on his shoes, seams on his gloves, and that's not even mentioning his face. The scar on the left of his face is really gnarly and his overbite is sculpted, not painted, on. His hair is also textured. The paint apps are really clean with no bleeding and what really stands out are the spray apps on his shirt (making it look dirty) and in the folds of his pants (adding shading). On top of all this he has 13 points of articulation and while some of them aren't too moveable (I had trouble with his arms popping off at the shoulder when I raised them), they are tight and he can stand in some good poses. He comes with 10 accessories including a removable hat, two pairs of fists, and some weapons. I should take a minute here and point out the coolest part (and best marketing plan I've seen in awhile) of the line which is that each figure comes with a piece of a zombie. When you have the entire line, you are able to put together a very nice looking zombie for the Goon and Frankie to beat on. Something else I thought was very nice of Mezco was this: If you're only getting one figure from this line it's going to be the Goon, right? Well, what are you going to do with that zombie head? No problem, because his axe snaps nicely into the back of the zombie's head so he can carry it around like he just took the guy out. Nicely played, Mezco.

The Goon's sidekick may be little, but he packs a punch! And if that doesn't work he can use his tommy gun! Frankie is a nice looking figure too. The sculpt is equally as impressive with the textured wife beater, suspenders raised, and the textured shoes. (All these figures have nice shoes... could this be a fetish we don't know about?) The paint apps are clean, even on his wisps of hair. He has 11 points of articulation, and while none are in his legs, (I think he'd fall over if he had them there), there is a double joint in the neck! The expression on his face is priceless and while I'll never figure out why he has no pupils, it still works. Frankie comes with 8 accessories including a removable hat, a big mallet, two sets of hands, and a knife with an eyeball on it. This fits snugly into the zombie's eye socket. Nice!!

This creepy old man is ready to command the living dead to go into your kitchen and bring back the leftover fried chicken. The sculpt on this guy's face is the best of the line. He is just nasty looking! This eyes are different sizes, he's got the "old man" big ears, he's wrinkly, and his mouth is full of nasty teeth. There is texture on his suit (which is sorta rubbery), and his hands have sunken joints and finger nails. The paint apps on the Priest are impressive as well... especially the face. Everything is clean but the mouth and eyes are where it's at! There is a glaze on them to give them a shine. His is disgusting and I love it. He has 9 point of articulation, again none in the legs for stability, but they are bent at a great hunched over angle. He comes with two accessories: His hat and a skull. is hat is really nice and rubbery and has a raised tanned face sculpted on the front. This seems like a homage to the Necronomicon from Evil Dead. Nice touch.

This guy is honestly one of the weirder action figures I've come across. And that's a good thing. This guy has short stubby legs, one tiny arm, a big head (AHH!), and one HUGE arm with a bowling ball in his hand. But weird or not, this is a nicely made figure. I know I've said it three times now, but the sculpt on this guy is just as nice. There are veins on his big arm, and his face has very nice detail. The paint apps are clean and he has 9 points of articulation. Again, none are in the legs, to add to the stability of the figure, which is a bit of a problem. With his one big arm, it's tricky to get him to stand without the bowling ball on the shelf supporting him. He comes with one accessory: a wooden box to stand on. Pretty funny.

click for largerOverall, this is a really nicely made line of action figures. Mezco really makes some quality pieces while not skimping on the production numbers. If you're a fan of the comic The Goon or if you just like hulking action figures (who doesn't?) you should hit up YouBuyNow to pick these guys up.

Mezco has some great things coming (including another line of the Goon), and their message board is full of good stuff. Check it out. Also check out Mezco's comic-styled Hellboy figures.
