Click here Neth Creatures Series One NC7, NC8, NC9
by Jager

Neth Creatures blur the line between art and toy more than any other Designer Toy available. While there has been an influx of art inspired toys this past year with pieces by MARS-1 and Joe Ledbetter gracing our vinyl collections; Neth Creatures are totally fresh and new designs; while the afore mentioned artists' toys were based on already established paintings/prints. What sets these Creatures apart from most Designer Toys (aside from not being vinyl) is the integration of almost pottery-like design elements into their look and feel. The forms are simple, organic, and fluid with arms coming from the center—breaking up the form in a very nice way. But what really kicks these into orbit is the interchangeable factor. Each piece is segmented into three sections which come apart with a simple twist. There is a top, bottom, and a center ring with the arms attached. Each section fits together with any section from another creature. This makes for a nearly endless variety of Neth Creatures for your collection, and the ability to create a Neth Creature that suits your attitude perfectly.

Click hereThere are three basic designs for Series 1 with three different colored palettes (brushed—limited to 500, natural—limited to 500, and flora—limited to 800); giving us nine original creatures to build from. Seen here is my personal favorite colorway of the series, Flora; making up NC7, NC8, and NC9. These are each made of clear plastic that encases another piece of plastic with the hand painted designs. This makes the surface smooth while simultaneously allowing the designer to give each piece and amazing amount of detail. Also, the problem of smudged or thin paint apps is non-existent, since these were meticulously painted before being applied (or in this case inserted) into the plastic casing. The center ring on each piece is brushed metal. This breaks up the shininess of the forms as well as gives the top and bottom sections a very solid "base" to lock into. The actual plastic the toy is made from is high quality with no waves or thin spots present. Yes Neth Creatures are quality pieces across the board, but each one has its own distinct feel as well.

This piece has the smallest head of the group and the longest base and arms. The Flora version of this guy is mostly blue and black with a simply gorgeous garden of upside down flowers painted down the base. With the arms down, it looks subdued; while with them up they look like antlers, and much more alert.

The form of this piece is the most human with a head and pot belly like shape. I love the amount of details on the brown section's flowers and how the arms curl perfectly into the thin portion of the top section.

The head on this piece is the most geometric of the group with a flat top. It still is rounded, but much crisper than his brothers (or sisters). The white flowers painted on the yellow background are a very subtle change from the other two Flora pieces and the legs on this guy are great with their thinness playing off the large head.

Click hereI believe that Neth Creatures are the freshest thing to grace my collection. These are totally original ideas put straight to the medium of toy. It really seems like these could be considered a break through in this medium. Often, we consider Designer Toys art (and I believe they are), but more often than not they are by an already established artist, or incorporate an already accepted form or idea. The Neth Creatures were virtually unknown before SDCC '05 and have made quite a few waves in the forum for taking chances and following their instincts.
